    I wish to wipe and reinstall windows on a laptop that has Bitlocker activated.


    I'm locked out of the device. I don't want to get into the stored data, I just want to be able to use the laptop. It was gifted to me by a fellow student, but they didn't know the password or pin to get into the laptop.

    Nonexistent Bitlocker key + won't wipe

    Hello and thank you.

    I had no idea Bitlocker was on my laptop until it Bitlocked me out. The laptop is listed as one of my devices on my Microsoft account nonetheless my account shows zero Bitlocker keys. I resigned myself to wiping the computer back to factory settings today, but after asking how I want to install Windows, cloud or local (cloud I assume because I don't know what else I'd use) I get taken back to Bitlocker and asked for that miserable phantom key.

    I have no idea why Bitlocker activated. I used the Dell housekeeping tool to check on everything the evening before and was prompted to do a BIOS update. For that I turned my laptop into an expensive paperweight?

    May wiser minds than mine lead the way.

    To assist you better, we would like to confirm if Windows 10 is activated before you wiped your computer.

    Meanwhile, we suggest that you run the Activation troubleshooter. To do this, follow these steps:

    • Go to Settings.
    • Select Update & security.
    • On the left pane, choose Activation.
    • Click Troubleshoot.

    Hello,

    I'd like to kindly ask HOW
    (if possible with steps) to Reinstall AND Re-activate Windows10 after I have
    wiped completely (not just format) my PC.

    My question is not so much the installing process as to how to get an
    activated version     back again running WHEN
    my current version is a free upgraded win10 from win7.

    IS Windows10 still being distributed for free? And IF NOT how can I get back this free activated licensed back after the wipe?

    I appreciate any help given and time spent for a thorough reply.
