  1. Icons are a nightmare

    I have done searches and haven't found anything useful. Never had problems like this in Windows 7.

    Problem 1 Icon files that don't show the correct image.

    The system seems to remember an old image associated with a file and directory. Say you download favicon from a website, then rename it, then download favicon from a different website, the second download will display the image of the first. If you rename the icon to something else or move it then suddenly it displays the correct image.

    I guess this is to do with the icon cache just not updating?

    Problem 2 A far greater headache is creating webpage url shortcuts on desktop or toolbar so that they display the website icon instead of a browser icon such as opera or edge.

    I have spent hours on this but to no avail. Best options I have is a somewhat unreliable Internet Explorer work around. Use IE to create the shortcut on the desktop and it creates the icon over a blank page, in the toolbar it is just the icon (great!) but at times some or most icons get changed to a globe or whatever else. It even sometimes fixes the icons of shortcuts created by other browsers (issue 1 related?).

    Have examined the files using notepad and as per internet searches tried adding the icon address url info but the icons never change neither desktop or toolbar. Seems like only IE has the ability to store/link the icon image to shortcuts correctly.

    Of course I can download the site icon for each favourite/bookmark and apply to the shortcut but that is not user friendly for my family especially considering the first problem with icons retaining other images.

    At one point when I closed IE I lost all but one icon, then later exploring system C to see if I can find icons/favicons/files, suddenly noticed the shortcut icons return to correct state.

    Any insights into what is going on? Is this typical behaviour of Windows 10?

    PS can anyone explain what the top two lines of the shortcut are:

    [{000214A0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]

    Prop3=19,11

    IconFile=https://splatoon2.ink/favicon-32x32.png

  2. NIGHTMARE icon in windows taskbar

    Ok ... this is really an annoying thingy in Windows Vista that till today. My top wish list is to solve this !!! *Bang Head :banghead:*Bang Head :banghead:*Bang Head :banghead:*Bang Head :banghead:*Bang Head :banghead:

    See attached pic ... for eg. open My Computer ... icon is of course as shown - the My Computer default Vista icon ... after you browse? *swoosh* kind of black magic ... it changes to that icon with the green arrow ... browsing back to My Computer it remains like that ... with the green arrow!!!

    This happens to any and all folders ! ... When you load it ... it comes up with the default folder ... after exporing through folder it changes ... and remains like that.

    For info : have tried a fresh installation of Vista to make sure that no bug got in. So must be some DAMN Vista settings

    Thanks mates ... hope you enjoy this puzzle !
