Windows 10: IDE Hard Drives are Dead and I Need Help

It's the best thing to do. If you still have IDE ports somewhere.
Or test the usb to ide on a different computer and/or with a different hard drive to make sure it's still working.

 

Before you start changing HW and adapters, check if any show up in device manager.

 

It doesnt show up in device manager.

 

Are they 3,5" drives ? Do you have power to them and I don't mean just USB ?

 

Sorry, but it is very difficult to help you when you don't give more information.
We still don't know what kind of computer you use, we don't know your system specs and last, what hold you back to install the disks in your computer to test whether they are fine?

Theyre 2.5" drives for notebooks. They have no external power since theyre notebook drives.

 

OK I'm going to ask a stupid question
You have 2 2.5" drives for notebooks
But is your computer a notebook?
Maybe it isn't and that's why you are not addressing installing your 2.5" drives into your computer?
Please help us out here.

Your questions isnt stupid. I got a PC but I use the IDE as data backups. I tested the USB to IDE adapter on a different PC and I get the same result which is, the drives arent recognized.

 

so its simple ,either the cable is broke or the drives are broke ,so you need to try a different cable ,or your cable with a known working harddrive ,,my guess is, its the cable

 

yes they do ,the adapter and the hdd have 2 parts to the plugin ,a wide one and a narrow one ,the narrow one is data and the wide one is power

 

I'm in danger of hijacking this thread but will try not to. [hijack] OP might not be the only one. Several or all of my 2.5" IDE/PATA drives in usb2 enclosures written on 32 bit XP work fine on XP and 32 bit Linux on the same laptop. They are not detected on Windows 10 at all, nor in Live Linux session on a 64 bit laptop. No new device connected sound, no blinking of any handshake, nothing. They don't exist. [/hijack end] ----------------------- Edit: I just read a bit more of this thread. I will likely start a new thread because my configuration is different in that I do not use any IDE adapter.

 

It's embarassing. I'm an idiot. I was plugging them into a hub which I thought was powered and it was not. Too many hubs here and loose wire on the floor *Sad Drives work perfectly. Including the original HDD that I can put back into XP if I want to boot the old XP home unused in 8 years *Smile VERY sorry to have interrupted this thread. ------------------------------ Can a moderator delete both of my posts to keep this thread clean, please.

 

Why not take the HDD's out of the USB case and plug them directly into the computer?
You have nothing to lose.

Huh?? Cuz my motherboard doesnt support IDE.

 

If you would have told which motherboard you have, then we would not have asked you several times to install the HDD's in the PC.
And how do you know the HDD's are not SATA interface?
Notebook HDD's are normally since years not IDE anymore, they have all SATA or as newest interface M2.
Maybe it would help us more if you would tell us the name of the mother board and the manufacturer/model name of your USB HD's
