Windows 10: identify unknown device

hi, I performed a fresh install of w10 on my sisters HP DV6 laptop, everything works but device manager shows 1 unknown device, is there anyway to find out what it is, I've installed all the drivers from the manufacturer

Already tried most of what is suggested, walthru steps are differnt in Windows 10 by the way, so document out of date for that version of OS>

On troubleshooting of devices get following messages

The devices shown below have errors......

1. Doesn't have a driver - doesn't say which device

2. Unknkown Device - not a great help if unknown!!!

3/ I don't see my device listed

Click 1 it then says Troubleshooting couldn't identify problem. on report says:

Issues Found

Problem with PnP Devices, but fails to identify which device. - useless answer

Click 2 it says apply fix for this unknown device doesn't tell you what is has fixed but has update drivers for a device it doesn't knpw what it is, - bonkers

Click 3 it says Troubleshooter couldn't identify a problem - another pointless response

Bireiefly Troubleshooter has failed to identify the issues, it identifies an unknown device which which it appears to fix, yet it unknown and doesn't have a driver????

Guess Windows 10 strikes again!!!

Any more ideas on how to fix this issue?

Recurring failure on Windows Update for Windows 10 Home Version 1709 from Version 1703

We apologize for the late response. Unknown devices do not affect the Windows update components. It only means that an unknown device is not functioning due to Windows unable to identify that device and provide a driver for it.

For further queries, feel free to post back.

Go into DevMgr, open unknown device, click on properties, open the Details tab, then post the values you find in the Hardware IDs field. For example, for an OCX Vertex 3 drive on my system, here's what I get:



Let us know what you find when you do likewise. (Hint: you can search on this information in Google to identify devices yourself, too.)

If you go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers sometimes it will show a device with a yellow warning symbol. If that's the case, right-click and go to 'Troubleshoot'. Follow the on-screen prompts.

But in your case, the unknown device is probably something called 'HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection'. See the following link for details and download links:

I've found out it was some sort of HDD Guard
