    If i upgrade my computer...

    Hi i just want clarification. If i upgraded my current PC specs to a newer better one. Would my free upgrade from Win 8.1 to Win 10 still be ok or not?

    I mean basically, do i HAVE to buy the new PC before i upgrade to win 10? or can i use it on both the old PC which i will get rid of (so i mean i wont have it installed on 2 PCs at the same time), then when i get the new one, reinstall it without any problems. Like the usual, this windows key has been used, buy a new one? Then have to ring the number as normal and put in the code, blah blah, and get a verification code back.

    :)

    If i upgrade my computer...

    Post your PC specs and then someone can give you a better answer but if your PC can use Win8.1 it will likely be ok to run Win10,

    If you buy a new computer that has Win 7 with SP1 or Win 8.1 on it, it will be eligible to be upgraded to Win 10. You as an individual don't get a free upgrade but each machine with an eligible OS gets the upgrade.

    If you really meant to say you plan to build a new computer and transfer the upgraded Win 10 from the old to the new, that would depend on whether the OS you have on the old computer is an OEM or retail copy of the OS.

    If you wait until July 29th, the new PC will probably have Win 10 on it. Or maybe it will have an upgrade to Win 10, when available, if you buy it sooner. Either way you have until July 29th, 2016 for a free upgrade.

    i dont think specs matter at the moment, is it? It was windows 8 compatible on the motherboard i bought, which i use now. I have a few parts in mind to make my new one again. I dont buy them pre-made i always make my new PCs. It will be very up to date on all parts, only keeping the PSU really.

    I have the "reserve Win10" button and ive reserved it. Yeah basically what i meant was, could i use the upgrade once, then get rid of that, make my new PC and put windows 8.1 back and upgrade to win 10 again?

    and as ddgm91 said, is it really July 29th 2016? I thought they meant it came out in 2015 and the upgrade was only free until 2016 (1 year)?

    One last comment (i know a million questions lol) is maybe the best solution, on one of my old hard drives, clear it and put on an Insider Win10 (beta) till i make the new PC. Then use the upgrade on the new one?

    Again, it depends on whether your copy of Windows 8.1 was an OEM or Retail Windows. Did it come with your PC originally? Or did you build it? If you built it, which version did you use?

  9. It sounds as though you purchased a retail Win8 or OEM builder version and installed it on your current machine (apparently updating it to 8.1 at some point).

    You're building a new machine and want to put Win8.1 on that and your question is, will that be eligible for the free Win10 update?

    If you install Win8.1 on the new machine - yes it will be eligible. To comply with the User agreement, you will have to remove the Win8.1 (and possibly updated Win10) from the old machine (I think you said that would be the case -> so i mean i wont have it installed on 2 PCs at the same time)
    Note: Technically an OEM builder license does not really fall into the same rights category as a retail version.

    It might be easiest if you start with a good Win8.1 base when you start the install process for the new machine.

    @Mystere
    i bought and am using an OEM Windows 8 64bit, single license (version 6.3 build 9600) if u need to know that?
    i am up to current full updates available, win 8.1 now

    @Slartybart
    yes u are right mate with what i said, ok that sounds like the easiest option i think. Need to get some new DVD-Rs then to copy on, i havent got any at the moment.

    @Jamesfle - Windows 8 System Builder copies are transferable *if* you were the one that purchased them, which you say you were.. so you shouldn't have a problem. Windows 7 System Builder licenses are *not* transferrable, but you're talking about Windows 8, so that's not a problem.

  12. Ok, another technicality ... you have an OEM license which does not allow you to transfer the OS to another machine.

    It is not a technical issue, it can be done - it's a licensing issue.
    You don't need a key to download the Win8.1 ISO, but you will need a key to install it on the new machine. You'll have to find the key on the old machine and try to use that on the new machine. It might fail since the old machine is still active - the only way around that is through telephone activation support.

    But... this is a EULA violation. If phone support gives you their blessing, I guess you can take that as "MS will bend the rules to get Win10 installed"

    If i upgrade my computer...

    Actually, that's not true. With Windows 8, Microsoft relaxed the licensing of System Builder licenses to allow transfer if you were the one that purchased the license for your own use. ie, System Builder is essentially a "Retail" license because there was no official Retail license of Windows 8.

    Yeah, if you were planning to get Win 10 on a new PC why didn't you wait till July. New PCs will come with Win 10 and you wouldn't have to raise this question.

    true badrobot, i might wait then for the new computer build. For now, to get used to win10, try it out, etc. I will install win10 Insider version, on a spare drive i just cleared for now and try it. Update Win8.1 to Win10 later on the new PC.
    @Mystere The amount of PCs ive done and PCs that have hard drives fail or motherboard failures down the range of windows. I have all of them from Win 95 up to Win 8. I have that phone number on a piece of paper, i hated ringing up to explain to a support person, explaining what u were doing every time and saying "No i dont have it on 2 PCs and i wont use it that way" etc. I have the one to get straight to the exchange of codes to verify the install is legit. Hope its still the same lol. *Smile
