  2. Second Reboot after applying updates takes 20+ minutes!

I have a Surface Pro 4. I have all updates applied today, including the firmware update released on August 30.

This afternoon I noticed there was a cumulative update for Win10. When I applied it this is what happened.

    • Download and install update.
    • Restart when it told me to.
    • Let it do its thing.
    • It finally rebooted (maybe 5min, so normal time I think)
    • Logged in. Launched a few apps. Closed them.
    • Rebooted.
    • It said "applying updates" and appeared to hang here for 20 minutes. It finally finished shutting down and restarted.
This is the 2nd time this has happened. It did it with a cumulative update in mid-late July, before I was on the Anniversary update, so the Anniversary update isn't the culprit.

I checked the System Event log and this is what I found:

    • 8:19 - Winlogon event for the Custoemr Experience Program said "user logoff" (this always seems to be the last or next to last entry in the event log when rebooting.
    • 8:28 - Service Control Module said "The start type of the Windows Modules Installer service was changed from auto start to demand start."
    • 8:37 - The Event log service was stopped.
    • 8:37 - DHCPv6 client service is stopped. ShutDown Flag value is 1
    • 8:37 - Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 10.00. 14393 Multiprocessor Free. (now actuallyl rebooting)

In that same time frame, the APplication Servie Log said:

    • 8:19 - User Profile Service - Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards. No user action
      is required.
    • 8:19 - Search - Enumerating user sessions to generate filter pools failed. Details: (HRESULT : 0x80040210) (0x80040210)
    • 8:20 - Search - Enumerating user sessions to generate filter pools failed. Details: (HRESULT : 0x80040210) (0x80040210)
    • 8:22 - Search - Enumerating user sessions to generate filter pools failed. Details: (HRESULT : 0x80040210) (0x80040210)
    • 8:37 - The User Profile Service has stopped.
It seems the registry is getting locked maybe? Why is this happening, and why does whatever it is take 20min to resolve? Why would it happen after the updates are applied and I've successfully logged in again?

This only happens after a cumulative update AFAIK. I can otherwise reboot all day long in under a minute. Even the SP4 firmware updates only took about 10min to install and that was all at the firmware level. The rebooting of Windows 10 was nearly instant.

  3. Second Reboot after applying updates takes 20+ minutes!

Really? It is like you didn't read my post.

    • I have a surface pro 4. The thing is smoking fast.
    • The problem isn't installing updates. The update installs go fine, as noted in the OP.
    • It is in the first reboot after the update process says everything is done.

If server is rebooting and applying updates and taking long time and I reboot the firewall...

Windows 10 takes long time to reboot, shutdown and/or logout.

My laptop has windows 10 enterprise 64bit build 1703 and it is on company domain and bitlocker encryption is enabled on SSD.

Sometime but not all the time, laptop takes long time to reboot, shutdown and/or logout. Did the sfc scan and found nothing. An interesting thing I found is: if I pull out the power adapter while stuck in reboot, shutdown or logout, the laptop almost immediately finishes the action correspondingly...

    Any idea why?
