Windows 10: IFA 2019: New Laptops Verified through Intel Project Athena

What’s New: At IFA 2019 in Berlin, Intel is showcasing advancements in mobile computing that are driving the next evolution in PCs. The company shared details on new laptops verified through its innovation program code-named “Project Athena” and updates on Intel’s Open Labs, supporting performance and low-power optimization of vendor components for laptops. Throughout the week, new laptops based on the all-new 10th Gen Intel® Core™ processors will be announced from Acer, Asus, Lenovo, MSI and Razer. The 10th Gen Intel Core family includes a range of mobile PC processors that are redefining what’s possible in thin-and-light laptops and 2 in 1s – from next-generation graphics and new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to delivering the performance scaling needed for demanding multithreaded workloads.

New Laptops Verified through Project Athena: Intel’s OEM partners are also announcing new laptop configurations verified to the target specification and key experience indicators of the Project Athena innovation program, which will join Dell Inspiron 14 5000, Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1, Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, HP EliteBook x360 1040, HP EliteBook x360 1030 G4, HP EliteBook x360 830 and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon. As first revealed in August, laptops verified through Project Athena will feature the “Engineered for Mobile Performance” identifier in signage and product marketing efforts from Intel and its partners. Look for it in stores and online from PC manufacturers and retailers including Best Buy, Costco, Dixons and JD.com this holiday season.

“Project Athena-based laptops will deliver what our members desire with improved performance, instant on, intelligence, great battery life and improved connectivity all in new, beautiful, sleek form factors. Laptop Components Optimized in Open Labs: Launched in Taipei, Shanghai and Folsom, California, this year, Intel’s Open Labs support performance and low-power optimization of vendor components for laptops aligned to Project Athena. Since opening in June, more than 20 laptop components have been verified for low-power optimization, and Intel continues to work with the industry to expand component assessment and validation.

Among the verified components are solid-state drives, touch controllers, embedded controllers and display panels, which can often have the greatest effect on a device’s performance and power consumption. Enabling component vendor assessment, tuning and compliance at the Open Labs will help drive consistency in delivering Intel’s vision for Project Athena. A list of verified optimized components will be available to OEMs for consideration throughout upcoming product development cycles.

What’s Next: As part of its long-term commitment to advancing innovation with the ecosystem, Intel will be joined by more than 800 members of the PC ecosystem on Sept. 5-6 in Taipei, Taiwan, and Sept. 9-10 in Shanghai, China, for its Ecosystem Symposium series to share insights on the program and discuss future innovation efforts.

Intel Unveils Project Athena Open Labs to Optimize Laptop Components

What’s New: Intel today revealed plans for Project Athena Open Labs in Taipei, Shanghai and Folsom, California, to support performance and low-power optimization of vendor components for laptops built to Project Athena design specifications and target experiences in 2020. Located in key ecosystem hubs and operated by teams of Intel engineers with system-on-chip (SOC) and platform power optimization expertise, the three Open Labs sites will begin operating in June 2019 to enable and optimize components.

What It Means: Intel’s expanded level of integration with the PC ecosystem will accelerate the development of advanced laptop designs and capabilities by adding greater efficiency to the component selection process for OEMs, and by enabling a continuous cycle of tuning and testing based on real workloads and usage models.

Why It’s Important: This week, more than 500 members of the PC ecosystem gathered in Taiwan for the Project Athena Ecosystem Symposium to ready the first wave of Project Athena designs. Announced at CES 2019, Intel’s innovation program, code-named “Project Athena,” was developed to help bring to market a new class of advanced laptops. Co-engineered with partners across the ecosystem, the first Project Athena devices will be available in the second half of this year.

With Project Athena, Intel has fundamentally changed its approach to innovation. Rooted in extensive research to understand how people use their devices and the challenges they face, Intel engineers and social scientists have developed a set of predefined key experience requirements designed to enable new experiences and capitalize on next-generation technologies, such as 5G and artificial intelligence, across the full PC platform.

Every component within a laptop affects the user experience, from power consumption to responsiveness and beyond. Enabling component vendor assessment, tuning and compliance at the Open Labs will help drive consistency in delivering the best technologies without compromise. Early alignment and enablement at the component level sets a strong foundation for OEM design readiness and implementation to help ensure systems meet Project Athena experience targets.

How It Works: Project Athena Open Labs will be the first step in readying the next wave of Project Athena designs for 2020 and beyond. Independent hardware vendors (IHVs) will have the opportunity to submit parts for compliance assessment via Project Athena Open Labs, and Intel’s OEM partners can also nominate preferred component vendors for participation.

Each lab is supported by experienced engineers to test, tune and provide recommendations to improve power and performance capabilities across a broad range of laptop components and categories, such as audio, display, embedded controllers, haptics, SSDs and wireless. The state-of-the-art facilities are located in regional hubs, so ODMs and IHVs can come into the labs year-round for component assessment and solution pathfinding aligned to the Project Athena vision. Following assessment, a list of optimized components will be made available to OEMs for consideration throughout product development cycles.

OEMs, ODMs and IHVs will begin to submit components to the Open Labs over the coming weeks.

Intel Debuts Visual Identifier for Project Athena

What’s New: Today, Intel announced that laptops verified through its innovation program, code-named “Project Athena,” will feature the visual identifier “Engineered for Mobile Performance.” PC manufacturers and retailers can use the identifier across promotional activities and in-store and online retail environments to draw consumers to the laptops that meet the high standards of the program’s target specification and key experience indicators (KEI).

The new identifier can be found for the first time today with the new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1*, one of the initial systems verified through Project Athena and now available for U.S. customers to purchase from Dell.com. Over the coming weeks, the identifier will also be visible in marketing efforts for the HP EliteBook x360 1040* and HP EliteBook x360 830*, which are also among the initial laptops verified through the program. Additional laptops are expected from Acer*, Asus*, Dell*, HP*, Lenovo* and Samsung* for the holiday season.

Why It Matters: Project Athena is Intel’s ambitious innovation program aimed at delivering a new class of advanced laptops that help people to focus, to be always ready and to adapt to different roles throughout the day. With support from more than 100 partners across the ecosystem, Intel’s long-term commitment with Project Athena includes ongoing research to define new experience targets and product specifications, co-engineering support, innovation pathfinding and joint marketing efforts. Through broad ecosystem collaboration, the program will drive innovation across the entire PC platform to create better experiences on the laptop and help people do the things that matter most to them.

Research suggests that consumers often rely on visual signals and retail displays to inform their buying decisions. Testing of the identifier and its messaging showed that it grabbed people’s attention in stores and online and indicates how the laptops are the result of engineering collaborations specifically designed for on-the-go PC experiences.

How It Works: In this first year of the program, the “Engineered for Mobile Performance” identifier indicates that the laptop has been co-engineered with Intel to meet the foundational KEIs of the program.

Laptops featuring the identifier will have passed the verification process, a robust and iterative process led by Intel engineers, that includes meeting specified platform requirements and KEI targets across six innovation vectors: instant action, performance and responsiveness, intelligence, battery life, connectivity and form factor.

The identifier can be used across PC manufacturer, retailer and other online listings and product detail pages, as well as on in-store display systems, demos and packaging. For applicable 10th Gen Intel® Core™ processor-based systems, the designation will be used in conjunction with 10th Gen Intel Core processor badges.

For highlights of the 1.0 target specification and KEIs, see the Project Athena fact sheet. More than a dozen designs from PC manufacturers are expected to be aligned with the first target specification.
