    It is my understanding that when a user opens a file from File Explorer, Windows uses DDE to communicate with the Excel application if an instance is already running. When the subject option is enabled, the expectation is the file opens in a new instance of Excel.Does Windows no longer use DDE to communicate with the Excel application?Two machines:Microsoft Windows 10 Pro, Version 10.0.19043 Build 19043 Microsoft Excel for Microsoft 365 MSO 16.0.13801.21072 32-bitMicrosoft Windows 10 Enterprise, Version 10.0.18363 Build 18363 Microsoft Excel for Microsoft 365 MSO Version 2110 Build 16.0

    problem in launching MS Excel from File Explorer

    hi all,

    I have found the fix as follows:-

    Resolution

    To resolve this problem, try the following methods, as appropriate, in the given order. Method 1: Ignore DDE
    This problem may occur if the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) check box in Excel options is selected.

    When you double-click an Excel workbook in Windows Explorer, a dynamic data exchange (DDE) message is sent to Excel. This message instructs Excel to open the workbook that you double-clicked.

    If you select the "Ignore" option, Excel ignores DDE messages that are sent to it by other programs. Therefore, the DDE message that is sent to Excel by Windows Explorer is ignored, and Excel does not open the workbook that you double-clicked.

    To correct this setting, follow these steps:
    • On the Tools menu, click Options.
    • Click the General tab.
    • Clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) check box, and then click
      OK.

    Click File - Options

    Click the General tab

    Clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) check box, and then click OK

    Try this

    Open Excel > File > Options > Advanced > Scroll down to General section > Check Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
