    I'm gone

The hype and platitudes revolving around Windows 10 are now meaningless to me for I cannot download and install the upgrade on my desktop computer. I have spent hours and hours and many days attempting to do so by various processes.

Regardless of whether I employed the Media Creation Tool and its different methods or the upgrade notification, the upgrade has stopped in mid-stream, the computer boots and restores to the previous OS which is Windows 7 Professional 64. One of two different error messages have been displayed. I have responded to each as guided by Microsoft instructions.

When I ran out of my expertise, I sought solutions from this forum, other internet computer forums and the Microsoft Community Forum. I applied each and every recommendation. None worked.

Before any attempt, I insured that all extraneous devices were either uncoupled or disabled, anti-virus programs uninstalled, internal SSD’s were made inoperable (other than my primary SSD upon which Windows 7 resides), and I ran Microsoft’s update fixes and repairs. I also checked the disk for errors and lastly deleted any installation files residing from the last failed attempt.

I have purchased each and every Microsoft OS starting with the original PCDOS for my ancient Leading Edge PC in 1980. While some of the OS’s had to be harnessed, none created such a hassle for me as this bug infested Windows 10 upgrade on my present state-of-the-art desktop. I no longer have the time or patience to bring Windows 10 onto my desktop. This is the first time I have ever given up on Microsoft.

For you who have been successful bringing Windows 10 to your computer, I congratulate you. For you who have failed to bring Windows 10 to your computer, I sympathize with you.

For now, I am gone. Hopefully, I might be back when Microsoft presents a finished Windows 10 OS product that easily installs. Until then, I will stick with Windows 7.

    :)

Most likely there is something wrong in your existing Windows 7 install that is causing problems with the upgrade. Years of malware, cutting off your machine without a proper shutdown, OEM junk software, and installing & uninstalling junk programs takes a toll on an operating system.

If you're serious about moving to Windows 10, here's how to end up with a fast, stable operating system.

    1. Reinstall Windows 7 from scratch. Delete all partitions on that SSD so you know nothing will be left behind.

    2. Make sure Windows 7 is activated with Microsoft.

    3. Use the Windows 10 install you made with the Media Creation Tool to do an in-place upgrade to Windows 10.

    4. When you get into Windows 10 after the upgrade make 100% sure it's activated with Microsoft.

    5. Boot to the DVD or USB flash drive you made with the Media Creation Tool and do a fresh re-install of Windows 10. Delete all partitions like you did in step 1.

    6. Make sure Windows 10 is activated when you get it re-installed.

    7. Install AMD graphics drivers for Windows 10.

I sympathize with the poster , I spent 6 days and countless hours with a different issue ( activation ) but also with previous preview builds got the " windows 10 cant be installed reverting back to previous version of windows " message so I do understand how windows 10 has peed him off . I,d definitely go with owensdj and strip everything right back to a clean install of original OS and go from there , this is what worked for me in the end .

    Good luck

ownsdj has the answer. The clean install of your original OS is key.

  9. carbuff: My advice is to wait for a while. Any "new" OS that comes out with a 1GB set of updates to be applied almost immediately, followed by what amounts to a Service Pack within a month of release, is obviously NOT ready for prime time! My attempts at upgrades on two Win7 machines failed on both and resulted in one being left in an unusable state -- which has taken days of work restoring it to a useful state.

Perhaps in a few weeks, MS will relent and release a Win10 version that will allow us to do a clean install and then activate with an existing Win7/8.1 key. By that time, they might also have an ISO that has all the updates and fixes rolled into it -- one that actually works.

Remember you have nearly a full year to do the free upgrade -- so don't rush into it if you're having problems.

Trust me.. no OS would come out if it were to follow the requirements you laid out. Ever OS will have bugs and MS is fixing them on the fly. Yes.. it's a large patch and there's one coming out next week as well.

And have you missed that you can get an ISO from MS to do a clean install?? Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums I got mine via the media creation tool.

You can only clean install after you have successfully upgraded and activated so that doesn't help in this case.
