Windows 10: I'm having trouble connecting my external monitor

Laptop: HP EnvyI've had an external monitor hooked up to my laptop for several months. All of the sudden, it stopped connecting. The power to the monitor is working but my laptop is not detecting it. I've troubleshooted it with a friend and we've tried the following: 1. connecting my external monitor to his brand new laptop with my cords 2. connecting my external monitor to his laptop with his cords 3. Connecting his working external monitor with his cords to my laptop which work with his laptop. We are not finding a solution. I'm afraid it's my computer AND my HDMI cord. But right now, I ha
