Hi!I have an old HP laptop that I stopped using about 3 years ago as I started college and left it home and used my MacBook. I am now back home and trying to use it and it will not let me in. I got in about 3 months back, though it still was finnicky then. I have reset my password today and can access my account via phone but cannot get into my laptop. I do not remember my pin but the password option isn’t working either! I have tried to put it into safe mode to restart and could not find the option but have restarted a few times since the password was reset. If anyone could help I would appre

I tried all of that with no luck. I did find that I wasn't as thorough as I thought about cleaning the old paste off the cpu, because there was some on one of the capacitors surrounding it. Could this have shorted it? I see no other evidence of damage on or around the cpu.

To my surprise, the chipset had no heatsink whatsoever. I don't know if this is common or not, but my old laptop had a little something on its chipset. I guess this explains why the palm rest got so hot.

It may be silly of me but try the next few things :

• See if ram stick are properly seated
• Try to check did you seated your cpu properly
• See if all of the cables lie down ok in their slots
• Check for excesive paste on the CPU socket
• Try a hard reset of laptop by removing the cmos battery out for 15 minutes
• Remove your HDD and try to start the laptop

I hope this will help you a bit. Had a HP Pavilion on a maintenance check a while ago and either you believe it or not he didn't want to start because of a bad hard drive and gave me signal that the CPU was faulty.
