  2. Google Meet is automatically adjusting my microphone volume in Windows 10. I'd like it to stop.

I use Google Meet for work. There's no getting around this, as my company uses it for every meeting. However, I've had issues where my microphone volume will go silent or peak at 100 seemingly randomly during
meetings. I went to check my settings in Windows and sure enough the microphone's volume slider was at 0 or 100. Out of curiosity, I left the Microphone Properties window open during a Google Meet meeting and I could see the volume slider move as
    I spoke.

    • There is no setting on Google Meet to disable automatic gain.
    • I've unchecked "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" under the Advanced tab in Windows.
    • I've updated my microphone's drivers.
    • I've uninstalled and reinstalled the microphone in the Device Manager.
    • I used my Logitech webcam's microphone to see if I had the same issue there (I did).
    • I used Google Meet in Opera, Firefox, and Edge to see if it was a Google Chrome issue (it isn't; the issue happened on each browser, for both mics).
    • I installed a script using nircmd to set the microphone volume to 50 every second, which is a band-aid fix for the slider moving around, but...

Now I have issues where my microphone volume will drop to a very low volume, and turning the volume slider to 100 doesn't fix it. In fact, nothing resets it except doing a system restore. But a system restore doesn't prevent these issues from happening again.
I'm guessing adjusting the volume slider at the same time Google Meet adjusts the volume causes an issue, but this is just a guess.

I really need help. I'm stuck using Google Meet, and I'd prefer to continue using this Windows 10 machine as it makes life easier (minus this specific issue). Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?

  3. Help Needed: Microphone Levels Dropping in Zoom and Google Meet

Thank you very much for reaching out! As an Independent Advisor and fellow Microsoft user, I'm more than happy to assist you.

Would you mind giving these steps a try and then informing me of the outcome?

    Disable Exclusive Control

Ensure that no applications are taking exclusive control of your microphone:

    • Go to Settings > System > Sound.
    • Under Input, select your microphone and click on Device properties.
    • Click on Additional device properties.
    • Go to the Advanced tab and uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
    • Click Apply and OK.
    Adjust Communication Settings

Windows might be adjusting your microphone levels due to communication activity:

    • Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select Sounds.
    • Go to the Communications tab.
    • Select Do nothing under When Windows detects communication activity.
    • Click Apply and OK.
    Run Troubleshooters

Run the built-in troubleshooters to identify and fix any issues:

    • Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
    • Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.
    Check Application-Specific Settings

Ensure that Zoom and Google Meet are not set to automatically adjust your microphone volume:

    • Zoom: Go to Settings > Audio and uncheck Automatically adjust microphone volume.
    • Google Meet: Unfortunately, Google Meet does not have a built-in setting to disable automatic gain control. However, you can use browser extensions like "Disable Automatic Gain Control" to manage this.
    Update Drivers

Make sure your microphone drivers are up to date:

    • Open Device Manager.
    • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    • Right-click your microphone and select Update driver.

Please feel free to reach out if you require any additional assistance. I'm here to help!

Help Needed: Microphone Levels Dropping in Zoom and Google Meet

    Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing a frustrating issue with my microphone levels during video calls. Whenever I start a call on Zoom or Google Meet, my audio level, which I set at 96, always drops to around 65-75 as soon as I begin talking.

I've tried everything I could find online, including reading forum posts, manuals, and following various tutorials, but nothing has worked so far. Here are the details of what I've done and observed:

    1. Platforms Affected: Zoom and Google Meet
    2. Issue: Microphone audio level drops from 96 to around 65-75 during calls
    3. Recording Software Used: OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop (same issue occurs, so it's not the recording software)
    4. Symptoms: My audio gain drops in Windows settings, not in the recording software. When I check the microphone properties in Windows, the level I set to 96 always drops to around 65.
    5. Impact: Although the other person can hear me clearly, my recorded audio level is very low, making it hard to take notes or record meetings effectively.
I really need your help to stop my audio level from dropping during meetings. I want to maintain control over my audio level and prevent it from automatically adjusting. Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!
