  1. Improve startup & shutdown using registry settings

I'm servicing a Win10 computer that's somewhat slow at startup & shutdown: other than that it runs excellently. I had an article once that showed how to improve them with some registry settings and I had used it on a couple of other computers successfully. Does anyone know how I can find the appropriate article?

    :)

  2. Heavy Slow down since upgrading to Windows 10

    Hi Pavan,

Nope, neither remedy has worked. Startup isn't a problem. Shutdown, as previously stated, hasn't improved and still takes approximately 5min for GUI shutdown then another 5 mins for post-GUI full shutdown. Aside from that d: is continuously running at
    100%.

As for usable links for the shared files in onedrive, I think this is now correct.

How to Enable Num Lock on Boot Up in Windows 10

'Fast Startup' must be disabled to keep NumLock 'on' after shutdown and bootup.

    Step I:

    • Search for and open “Power options” in the Start Menu.
    • Click “Choose what the power buttons do” on the left side of the window.
    • Click “Change settings that are currently unavailable.”
    • Under “Shutdown settings” make sure “Turn on fast startup” is disabled.
    Step II:

    • Press Win + R and type in Regedit.
    • Navigate to registry key HKEY_USERS\Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
    • Right click on the “InitialKeyboardIndicators”, select Modify and change Value data to 2.
    • Exit Registry.

Improve startup & shutdown using registry settings

    Hello,

Just for the record, I have two (inexpensive) computers that are relatively fast (for the prices paid).
My laptop can boot to my desktop in 8-11 seconds.
My desktop can boot to the desktop in 9 -12.
Of course the booting continues after the desktop is visible.

And, I did not use a single registry tweak to improve my performance.

I would suggest you start here:

    Good luck to you,

  5. As for shutdown, I guess, you meant something like this? 1000 = 1 second.
    Code: reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v "AutoEndTasks" /t REG_SZ /d "1" /f reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v "HungAppTimeout" /t REG_SZ /d "5000" /f reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v "WaitToKillAppTimeout" /t REG_SZ /d "5000" /f reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control" /v "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" /t REG_SZ /d "5000" /f[/quote]

  6. Thanks Tairiku, that is what I was looking for.
WOT I know what you mean as I have 2 inexpensive Win10 & 2 Win7 computers: none of them give me "slow"
But the way my friend uses his computer could be a factor. I'm not in the business of servicing computers other can helping when I can. I suspect it's just a matter of time a reset or clean install will solve his problems.
