Re: Windows 10 21H2 19044.2846I was in Documents and accidentally hit Ctrl-D. The list of folders jumped up. At that point I realized something was deleted. It did not go to the recycle bin as the Microsoft page on keyboard shortcuts says. I then made a test folder and repeated the disaster. The folders are permanently deleted without any warning. Is there something in my settings or configuration that might cause this or is this just how Explorer works now?Thank You

    :)

    Windows-Ctrl-d shortcut

I saw a few questions on the Windows-Ctrl-d shortcut, with unsatisfying answers.

This shortcut creates a "virtual desktop." You get another instantiation of your desktop, but all your open programs and their taskbar icons have disappeared! And you can't get back to them with Alt-Tab. However, contrary to what one or two questioners assumed, the shortcut only APPEARS to close your open programs. Your original instantiation of the desktop and the open programs associated with it do still exist.

See List of all Windows 10 keyboard shortcuts: The ultimate guide for a master list of shortcuts (I haven't seen a list this extensive on an MS site). According to this page, Windows-Ctrl-Left Arrow will get you back to your original desktop instantiation. (I just tried it; it works.) Search for "virtual desktop" on the page to see several shortcuts appropriate to this issue.

As an alternative, if you open Task Manager (Alt-Ctrl-Del), you can find your desired program in the list on the left (and open to the specific sub-instance under a ">" sign, if necessary). Double-click on the lowest sub-item associated with your open program, and your program and its associated desktop will reappear. (But note that the virtual desktop your created does still exist if you use this method.)

For a more permanent solution, you can download PowerToys for free here:

Get Microsoft PowerToys from the Microsoft Store

It has a feature that allows you to reassign or simply disable problematic keyboard shortcuts like Windows-Ctrl-d.

I'm posting this under Windows 10, as I am using a computer with that OS loaded. But I did a quick check on another computer with Windows 11, and the issue appears to be the same with that OS.

How to delete shortcut Ctrl + Shift?

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

For better clarity, please help us with the details requested below:

    • Have you assigned the “Ctrl + Shift” shortcut for any application?

Ideally, the shortcut Ctrl + Shift is used to switch the keyboard layout when multiple keyboard layouts are available. If you have assigned the shortcut for a keyboard layout, you may try changing it by following the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows Logo key + I, to open
      Settings.
    2. Click on Devices and select
      Typing
      on the left pane.
    3. Scroll down and select Advanced keyboard settings.
    4. Click on Input language hot keys.
    5. Select the layout for which you have assigned the shortcut and click on
      Change Key Sequence.
    6. Under Switch Keyboard Layout, select
      Not assigned.
    7. Click on OK (Twice).

    Let us know the results.

In explorer Ctrl-D is not working as Microsoft says in the list of keyboard shortcuts

Issue with some CTRL keyboard shortcuts not working / registering on Windows 10

I had been trying to figure out why certain shortcuts I use throughout each day had not been working recently, such as CTRL+D and CTRL+P.

Per a suggestion from another thread, I just now simply resolved it by uninstalling the keyboard driver from the Device Manager and restarting my computer. Bam, shortcuts registering again. Hope this helps someone. Thanks to volunteer Vijay_Verma
