Can't change the sync location of OneDrive to an external hard disk

    Hi ychow

    Greetings!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Upon reading the description you have posted, it seems that you have an issue with Microsoft Office 365 wherein you want to know how you can sync your OneDrive files to a different hard disk drive.

By the way, if you haven't tried the steps that we are going to provide down below. Then we suggest that you try it:

Change the location of your OneDrive folder

    1. Click the OneDrive cloud icon up in your Menu bar, click the three dots to open the menu, and select Preferences.
    2. Go to the Account tab.
    3. Select Unlink this PC.
    2. Move your OneDrive folders

Using File Explorer or Mac Finder, drag or move your computer's OneDrive folders to your preferred location.

Tip: If you want to have your OneDrive on a different drive (e.g. D:\ or a flash drive), read Install OneDrive on an external drive.

    3. Re-link your OneDrive

Follow these steps to re-link your OneDrive

    1. Go back to the OneDrive setup screen and select Get started
    2. Follow the instructions until you get to the screen where you see your OneDrive folder's location. Select Change Location.
    3. Choose the new folder location, and then select OK.
    4. You'll see a message letting you know that the OneDrive folder in the new location already has files in it. Select Use this location, and then finish setting up OneDrive.
Tip: If you had chosen to sync only some folders before the reset, you'll need to do that again once sync has completed. See Choose which OneDrive folders to sync to your computer for more information.

OneDrive Placeholders are coming back, now called On-Demand Sync

"At Ignite 2016, Microsoft has just announced that it is bringing Placeholders back to OneDrive on Windows 10. Now, they are not called Placeholders anymore — Microsoft is renaming the feature to “On-Demand Sync” which makes a lot more sense than “Placeholders”.

The company demoed this feature at Microsoft Ignite today, and it works just like it used to previously. As you can see in the screenshot above, the files stored in OneDrive weighed in around 9GB, but the actual size on disk was only around 3MB which is really neat. Of course, this feature isn’t anything new as it was available back in the Windows 8 days. However, Microsoft removed the feature with Windows 10, and after lots of waiting, they are finally coming back.

In case you are not familiar with OneDrive Placeholders, it’s a pretty neat feature which lets you see all of your OneDrive files on your computer — but they are not actually downloaded on your PC. When you open them, OneDrive will download the files on-demand, saving your local space which is really useful, especially if you have a PC that doesn’t have a lot of storage.

While Microsoft didn’t announce when exactly On-Demand Sync will be available to OneDrive users, we suspect it will be available with Windows 10 Redstone 2 — which is expected to arrive early next year.
