    In-place upgrade question

I'm currently on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. I'm getting the upgrade to Windows 11 "bums rush" from Windows Update. If I upgrade, will it be Windows 11 Pro or will I be stuck with the less-than-desirable limiting Windows 11 Home version?

In-place upgrade - XP to 10 without losing the apps

Wolfgang, you need at least two steps (Vista & Seven) between XP and 10, the Eight can be bypassed:
    • XP can only be in-place upgraded to Vista, not Seven or later
    • Vista can be in-place upgraded to Seven but not Eight or later
    • Seven can be in-place upgraded to 10
    • Ergo: XP to Vista is a must, as well as Vista to Seven but then you can bypass the Eight and jump to 10

Troubleshoot Windows updates after an in place upgrade repair

Multiple troubleshooting steps had failed to fix net framework, scannow, and restorehealth problems.
And multiple in place upgrades failed.

Modifications were made on each in place upgrade.
The last one fixed the net framework, scannow, and restorehealth problems.

The computer is functioning normally now except for these 5 Windows updates.

Had the in place upgrade failed I was planning to custom install.
This requires reinstallation of drivers and applications.

With the last in place working I was considering another in place upgrade repair.

What repair methods are you suggesting that were not already performed after the last in place upgrade repair?

    In-place upgrade question

    In place upgrade question

Yes, the in-place repair install tutorial using the ISO is exactly how you would do an in-place upgrade. In fact, if you use an ISO for newer version it will have the dual effect of a repair install (keeping your files and installed apps) and performing an upgrade.

Booting from the install media is effectively a clean install. You cannot keep your installed apps, but can optionally have your user files saved to a folder on the new desktop.

Using the MCT's option to 'upgrade this PC now' or using the Update Assistant to do the same thing is similar to using Windows Update to do the upgrade. You'll keep your files and installed apps but won't get to keep the install media afterwards.

The reason many here recommend not checking for updates is that it adds an extra layer of complexity to the upgrade. With the check for updates you will upgrade direct to the latest build, but sometimes the upgrade can fail. You'll find many posts here where after windows update has failed for a user they have been been recommended to use the ISO without checking for updates and successfully updated. After that, checking for updates in Settings will get the latest CU and take you to the latest build, so the end result is the same - it just takes two steps rather than one.
