Windows 10: In windows 10, how do I set up a backup using File History under a sub-directory I created...

In windows 10 and later 11, how do I set up a backup using File History under a sub-directory I created - as opposed to the root directory? When I set up the backup, the structure looks like this:R:\FileHistory>But I want it to look like this:R:\To_backup\FileHistory>There does not seem to be any option to do this when the backup is set up either via settings or control panel...Also, I suspected this would not work...but I tried moving it my self - meaning that I let FileHistory be created automatically under the root directory and then moved it manually myself - but I then get an e

Windows 10 File History Issue

I tried to use File History for the first time using a SanDisk External SSD for the purposes of having an Offsite backup for all my data.

It was recommended to me that the simplest way to create the backup in File History, was to delete all of the recommended folders in File History and then add C:\users.

After it ran the backup for the first time, I checked in File Manager what was saved and it had all of the data in \users\Public, but it did not have any of the data in my non-Public directory (for example, \users\mom). Though, it does show the directory
and includes some of the sub-directories, such as AppData. But it doesn't have any of the sub-directories where I keep my data, such as Documents, etc. I then opened the Restore utility and it listed the "mom" directory, but no data. The "Public" directory
had all of the documents, etc.

I then specifically added the "mom" directory in File History program and re-ran the Backup. No difference.

Does anyone have any ideas on what do?

 

File History has created a duplicate directory?

You probably got to this step (Option Three, step 3 in the tutorial Select Drive for File History in Windows 10 ) selected the drive in the top panel, then clicked OK






Depending on the answers you gave in steps 4 and 5 you would have either copied your old history into the new folder or started a fresh history. Either way you would have created a new folder for your history, your 'JAY-DESKTOPDELL (2)' folder.

What you should have done if you wanted to continue using the original folder was to select the existing back-up in the bottom panel before clicking OK, as I have done here.

JAY-DESKTOPDELL is your original history. Whether you copied the history into the new folder or not, it should still contain the older backups. You can check that it still does by browsing that folder. The 'JAY-DESKTOPDELL\Data\C\Users\<YourUsename>' folder contains the back-up copies of the files and folders, each file with its backup date appended to its filename. Do not modify anything here, it's safe to look but do not touch. (It's also safe to copy a file from here back to your PC as a alternative manual way to restore a file without the need to use the File History tool)

If you are happy that the original folder has all the history you need, then you can stop file history then delete the 'JAY-DESKTOPDELL (2)' folder. Then you can reconnect to the history drive, this time remembering to select the existing back-up.

 

Cannot remove directories from "included directories" list of file history windows 10 feature.

I have the problem related to file history on windows 10.

I recently updated to windows 10. And I liked the idea to be able to store file history of my documents every hour (instead of once a day). So I want to enable this feature.

But the problem is that I do not want to use standard directories being saved. By default those are:

- My home directory

- All subdirectories of my home directory.

- All _my_ libraries

- All public libraries (music, pictures etc.)

I should say, that I'm a developer and I have lots of things in my home directories and in some library directories, which I do not want to backup. What I want is to save the content of only one directory: "D:\docs".

Then, what I did is following:

- I selected the network location to store my files.

- I turned on the file history

=> I can see list of all directories, which are _included_ and _excluded_ from backup.

- I manually removed all the directories except of one of them (D:\docs) from the _excluded_ list.

- I started the backup

=>> And then I see, that all those library directories, which I've just removed from the list, are back and my backup takes several Gb instead of hundred Mb.

So, I disabled file history, removed all the files from network location, cleaned up the list of directories _included_ into backup once again. And enabled the file history again. And started the backup.

=>>> All the library directories are back to the "included directories" list??? What is this? I removed them explicitly. I don't want them to be there.

Question: How can I remove certain directories of my choice from the "file history" feature of windows 10?

Notice: I did not try to explicitly use _excluded_ directories list... but it is really not convenient. I have, probably, more than 50 directories included by windows by default. So I have to find them all manually and add to the second list? Besides, I
don't really know if it works...
