Windows 10: in windows 10 my desktop is not working

my windows 10 desktop is blank. If I move the mouse around and click on, for example, Netflix, it runs perfectly. The start menu works. Just the desktop is out to lunch. If I happen upon the location where the icons I have on my taskbar are located, they all work. Often when I manage to open a window, it works but the background of the window is filled with colons or dollar signs. The functionality is still there. Still I cannot see the desktop. Just for grins I changed monitors but have the same results.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
