Just want to turn off Safe Search, I click on "Off", but it doesn't stay off. It keeps reverting back. Strangely, Safe Search is stuck on Strict with no option to change it only in Edge it seems. Bing and Google in Chrome and Opera isn't locked to Strict.

  2. Safe Search set to strict in Internet Explorer

    Hello Narayan,

I suggest you to follow the steps below on how to change your Bing Safe Search settings:

    Go to
    http://www.bing.com/

    • Click the Gear (Preferences) icon towards the top right side of the page.

    • In the SafeSearch section, select your desired setting:

    • Strict – Filter adult text, images and videos from your search results.

    • Moderate – Filter adult images and videos but not text from your search results.

    • Off – Don’t filter adult content from your search results.

    • Click Save
    Hope the information is helpful.

I use Bing as my search engine in both IE11 and Chromium Edge and stay logged into Bing at all times. Obviously, Bing's menu is where I have to go to turn Safe Search OFF, as well as, uncheck Use Search Suggestions. Safe Search is OFF in Start Menu Settings, and both Safe Search and Search Suggestions are set to be off in the registry. I have no idea what else to do to keep both OFF permanently. Logically you would think if you turn Safe Search OFF in Start Settings that would work, but it doesn't … don't know why they even have the option since it doesn't work. With Bing you would think if you turn Safe Search off in the menu and uncheck Search Suggestions, then click Save and Agree, that would take care of it, but it doesn't. Many times I do both, and before I can even open the first web page, Safe Search is back to Moderate again, and Search Suggestions re-checked. Again, I have no idea what else to do. I have discussed this with Microsoft many times and they usually don't answer and change the subject to something else. It's a shame I can't be in control of my own PC!

Reply To Zebal Regarding Safe Search And Search Suggestions

There are 2 search services that you confuse:
    1. Windows Search
    2. Search engine search

Both of these service have "Safe search" option, but they are unrelated to each other in such a way that one does not affect the other.
Setting safe search in Windows (start menu) to OFF does not mean safe search in bing must also be OFF.

"Safe search" in Windows search does not apply to your browser, instead it applies to web previews when you use search function in Windows task bar / start menu, this can be powered either with or without cortana, but it has nothing to do with browsing web with web browser.

On another side "Safe search" in Bing (search engine) applies only when you surf the web using what ever web browser you happen to have.

Keep in mind if you open web page by using Windows search in web browser you'll be affected by both settings, but not in same time obviously.

"Search Suggestions" apply only to Bing (or any other search engine), but does not apply to "Windows search", in Windows search this feature is called "Cloud content search" which can in addition be powered with locally stored data to improve search performance (because cloud would be less accessed)

    Do you see the difference?
Windows search is one thing, Bing search is another thing, each of them has their own options independent of each other.

The only thing they have in common is the name of this option because these options share same functionality, but are not the same thing, because each applies to separate search service.
