Inaccessible Boot Device blue screen error when Hyper-V is enabled

Hi, I'm trying to setup a debian virtual machine on window server 2016. When I enabled the Hyper-V and restart, windows goes to the bluescreen having the error code: Inaccessible_Boot_Device. After that I logged in with safe mode and disabled Hyper-V on startup by using the cmd code 'bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off' . After that windows booted up normally. Since I want to use Hyper-V I want to know is there a way I can turn on Hyper-V manually after bootup or is there a solution for this blue screen error other than turning off Hyper-V.Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

    :)

    Can't Enable Hyper-V in Windows 10 Professional

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I appreciate your effort on this. As per my research the error code 0x800f0831 is generated when .Net Framework 3.5 is not enabled on the computer. I suggest you to try enabling .Net Framework 3.5 on the computer. Follow the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows key + R, to open
      Run
      dialog box.
    2. Type appwiz.cpl and click on
      OK
      .
    3. Click on Turn Windows features on or off.
    4. Now, select the check box for .Net Framework 3.5 and click on
      OK.
    5. Restart the computer.

You can also check if Virtualization feature is enabled in BIOS or not, if it is not enabled, I suggest you to enable it.

You may also refer the troubleshooting steps performed by Jins Peter replied on August 13, 2019 in the thread

Hyper-V on Windows Pro wont install

If the issue persists, I would suggest you to post your query in

  4. Inaccessible Boot Device blue screen error when Hyper-V is enabled

    Enabling Hyper-V bricks Windows

A while ago I posted a question about WSL2 not working on Windows 11: Redirecting. It turns out, WSL2 requires Hyper-V enabled (even though it isn't stated anywhere).

So now I have discovered a new (actually very old) issue, enabling Hyper-V and SVM (in BIOS) bricks Windows. I have now reverted back to Windows 10, though the behavior is same on both versions (since Windows 11 is just Windows 10 under the hood). Here's what happens:

    • Only Hyper-V Enabled = Boots fine
    • Only SVM Enabled = Boots fine
    • Hyper-V + SVM Enabled = Black screen or BSOD at boot
The BSOD, that appears sometimes (only Black screen most of the times), gives some insight, the error code is : 0xc0000098, caused by the BCD. Setting hypervisorlaunchtype to off in BCD (I can get to CMD through Safe Mode) "fixes" the booting issue, but it disables Hyper-V, so it is not a real fix for this problem.

I have found multiple forum posts discussing the same issue dating back to 2015, since the release of Windows 10, the final verdict being that this is a bug that needs to be resolved. But after 6 years and a new Windows release, the bug still exists.

Links to some forum posts, this is not an exhaustive list, just the first few I could find on a google search about this topic:
