  1. INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE after Windows Update

My Windows 10 Pro PC received the latest round of updates, and when it restarted, it bluescreens with the error INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

I did a system restore to a previous restore point, and everything booted and ran perfectly, but of course it then goes out to get the latest updates, and the same thing happens with it bluescreening and throwing the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error.

I followed many suggestions from a Google Search including disconnecting all drives other than the boot drive, running chkdsk /f on the boot drive, allowing Windows 10 to "auto-fix startup problems", and several other things, and it always bluescreens.

I temporarily disabled the Windows Update service so it doesn't go out and auto-grab the updates, but at some point, I will need to apply updates, and I expect future updates to result in the same bluescreen error.

    Suggestions?

    INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Is it just a coincidence that Windows 10 bombs out totally, after installing "Windows updates"??

So I will now need to reinstall Windows 10, and there is no more free option!!!

When I had this is was due to system partition corruption. Booted from install media and ran chkdsk /f /r from that command prompt on the system partition (check the size as well - should be around 500MB) - then ran bcdboot c:\windows (my drive letter was different IIRC, but check with diskpart)

  5. I'll try your suggestions, but oddly, it boots just fine after reverting to a previous restore point. Letting it update from there causes the bluescreen again. So unless the partition corruption is a subtle one that the current install doesn't see, I'm not sure if this will help. BUT I will try your suggestions and let you know what I find.

FYI, this is on only one of our computers. The other three (of different configurations) updated without issue. This PC has a legacy ASUS motherboard and a legacy OCZ Revo PCIe SSD card. So far, it's been pretty flawless with Wondows 7 & 10 up to this recent round of updates.

  6. OK, I tried your suggestions, and ran into two issues:
    1. When I boot from the install media, it does not see the REVO SSD drive. I'll have to see if we have drivers for that.

    2. I tried your suggestion from the command line in the Advanced Boot Options in Windows 10 and chkdsk returned no errors, but the bcdboot command gave a "failed to write files to disk" error.

We're next going to try imaging a good copy of the install (using Casper) from a good Restore Point to a SATA SSD drive, remove the REVO PCI SSD drive, and boot to the SATA SSD Drive and apply the Windows updates to see if it does the same thing. We're unsure if it's the drive or the motherboard.

Thanx for the feedback. I agree seems like missing drivers - unfortunately this will always be an issue (with cumulative updates anyway) as windows update replaces the boot files in the system partition .. until the manufacturer (?OCZ) gets those drivers certified and included as part of WU.

Suggest keep the drivers handy and install it each time WU asks for a restart - install the drivers and restart and then let the update complete - unless someone can think of a better way.
