  1. Inaccessible_boot_drive and drive names swapped and new “Boot” drive X: made?

Around the time of me downloading a BIOS update from Lenovo (i dont recall whether it was after or before), my laptop hanged indefinitely when i booted it up, and i had to close it through the power button and reopen it.

This happened for a while, then yesterday i went through the usual procedure and I instead got a blue screen. It said critical service failed. I just could not open my laptop, or even the automatic repair service. I got a blue screen, it restarted and it says “Preparing Automatic Repair” and never opens it. I have to close it and open it through power button in succession to open it.
Later the blue screen started saying inaccessible boot device.

After some poking around i discovered i can access my files. I had noticed my C drive became X, and i checked in File Explorer and my C: (which is where my windows was installed on) became D: and my D: drive became the C:

I got another mysterious E: which says something along the lines of “WINRE_DV” with 1 gb and half of it was used.

and i saw ANOTHER drive named “Boot”. It had 500mb free and i noticed most (if not all) the system files from C: (now D: but i will refer to it as C: for clarity) were in X:

What i think is that Windows could somehow not detect where to boot from since it usually always boots from C:, but now it detects nothing and thus it made its own drive to boot from. Is this correct?

some info: in the BIOS, i cannot see any drives. Only “Windows Boot Manager” and i cant do anything with it.

is the solution reassigning D: back as C: and vice versa? And if yes, how?

Any help is massively appreciated, since I really need to get to creating more content for my channel

  2. Swapping drive letters, including boot volume

I have a new computer. I want to clone the system to a new SSD. Can I change the drive letter of the SSD to C: after cloning?

    I have a new ASUS M52BC with:

    • 1 TB hard drive with a Windows (CInaccessible_boot_drive and drive names swapped and new “Boot” drive X: made? :) and empty data (DInaccessible_boot_drive and drive names swapped and new “Boot” drive X: made? :) partition
    • Windows 8.1 (I will upgrade to Windows 10 very soon) on the hard drive
    • Samsung SSD 850 EVO (physically installed but nothing more done to it)
What I want to get to is:

    • 1 TB hard drive with the data (DInaccessible_boot_drive and drive names swapped and new “Boot” drive X: made? :) partition and (for the old Windows partition) the drive letter of the C: changed to something else
    • Windows 10 on the SSD as the C:
I don't intend to boot to Windows on the hard drive after I get Windows working on the SSD unless I need to remove the SSD for return to ASUS for repair. (My new computer had a bad motherboard when I received it but I hope I do not need to return it again.)

I want to clone Windows to the SSD using the Samsung Data Migration tool. During the clone, the SSD will of course not have the drive letter "C". To boot from and use the SSD after the cloning, it must have the drive letter "C", correct? I assume the Data
Migration tool cannot change the drive letter used by the software it clones.

After the clone, how do I swap the drive letters? I assume I cannot change the drive letter of the hard drive Windows partition when it was used to boot from because it would be the boot drive, correct?

I know that some people will suggest that I do a fresh install. I want to avoid doing that if possible.

    I see
Migrate system partition to a new disk
. I think that describes doing what I am trying to do, but unfortunately he does not know how he did it.

Dual Booting 2 x Windows 10 OS Drives (Existing Installs)

It is uneccessary to do all of the above.
    1. Boot up Windows 10
    2. Open Disk Management and take a note of the drive letter of the other Windows 10
    3. Open Admin Command Prompt and type: bcdboot X:\Windows where X is the drive letter noted in step 2
    4. Reboot, you should have a dual boot menu.

    Boot issues with new drive

    Hi Dave,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern and frustration you have been through. I will be glad to assist you.

    1. What partitions are shown in the 5 TB drive?

I suggest you to check the disk management to format the boot partition in 5TB drive. so that it wont boot from HDD. Boot partition is the small partition which contains boot files required to boot the system.

To check the Disk Management follow the Steps below.

    1. Press Windows key + X

    2. Select Disk Management and check the partitions under 5TB

Hope the information helps. Please let us know if the issue persist and we will be happy to assist you further.

    Thanks
