Who makes a good inkjet printer?

My suggestion to you is buy a laser printer. Inkjets are money pits.

I suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the Epson device drivers. Follow the steps below:

• 
  Press Windows Key + X.
  
• 
  Click on Device Manager.
  
• 
  Right click on the Epson device listed and click on
  Uninstall.
  
• 
  Check box delete device driver.
  
• 
  Press Windows key + X.
  
• 
  Click on Programs and Features.
  
• 
  Right click on the Epson software listed and click on
  uninstall.
  
• 
  Reboot the computer.

• Is the scanner detected under Devices?
• Were you able to see the scanner on the Device Manager?
• Have you installed the latest driver for the scanner?
