Information Microsoft Edge is a new web browser that is available across the Windows 10 device family. It is designed for Windows 10 to be faster, safer, and compatible with the modern Web.

VP9 is an open source video format that offers efficient compression to stream HD content at lower bitrates, and is well suited to UHD streaming.

The initial VP9 implementation in Microsoft Edge will support adaptive streaming using Media Source Extensions, and will be detectable using the MediaSource.isTypeSupported() API. It will be specifically targeted to meet the needs of websites that use VP9 to deliver video in combination with MP4/AAC or other audio codecs already supported by Microsoft. Microsoft is working on future support for VP9 for media tags and local playback, as well as considering support for additional audio formats likely to be used with VP9 such as Opus.

This implementation of VP9 will support software decoding and, when supported by the device, hardware decoding. Since decoding video is computationally complex, the best experience with the software decoder will be seen on more powerful desktop and laptop computers.

Given this, VP9 will initially be implemented behind an experimental flag in Microsoft Edge as Microsoft continues to work with industry partners on broader support for hardware decoding, and as Microsoft evaluates support for additional audio formats. A setting will be available that alternatively enables or disables VP9 support.

For more details, see: Announcing VP9 support coming to Microsoft Edge | Microsoft Edge Dev Blog

VP9 is now supported in Microsoft Edge starting in Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10547.

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the VP9 codec extension in Microsoft Edge for your account in Windows 10.

    Here's How:

    1. Open the Microsoft Edge app.

    2. Type about:flags in the address bar, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

    3. Under Media Source Extensions, select Always on, Automatic (default), or Always off in the Enable VP9 video format menu for what you want.

    4. Close and reopen Microsoft Edge to apply.

    Cannot install extensions in Edge

    Hi,

I realize the inconvenience you are experiencing with installing Extension in Microsoft Edge. I will certainly help you with the issue.

I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below and check if that helps:

    • Launch your Edge browser and click on the 3-dotted
More link. You will see an Extensions item.

    • Click on Extensions to open the following panel. Here you will see a
Get extensions from the Store link.

    • Currently, extensions like Amazon Assistant, Evernote Web Clipper, LastPass, Mouse Gestures, Office Online, OneNote Web Clipper, Page Analyzer, Pinterest Pin It Button, Reddit Enhancement
Suite, Save to Pocket, Translate for Microsoft Edge, etc., are available for Edge.

    • Clicking on one of them will open the Windows Store page which offers this extension.

    • Click on the
      Free button to install it.

    • To enable the extension, click on
Turn it on. If you do not want to enable it, click on Keep it off. Once you do this, you will see this entry in the list of extensions installed. Here you see only one as I have installed only one extension.

    • Once the Edge extension is enabled, you will see it added to your panel. Right-clicking on it will offer you two options:

    • Show next to address bar

    • Manage.

    • You can toggle the switch to On/Off position – for the Pin It button as well as for showing it next to the address bar.

    • You will also see buttons that show you more
Options and one that lets you Uninstall the Edge extension.

    • Clicking on
Options will show additional settings offered for that plugin in a new browser tab that will open automatically.

    • Clicking on
Uninstall will uninstall the Edge extension.

    • The settings and options available for each extension, will of course differ.

    Hope this information helps.

Please get back to us with an update on the issue, we will be happy to help.
