  2. Ha Ha thanks for the ' support'....one very last question....as XP finalizes and goes through the last stages...How do I chose between W10 and XP ? I assume it will be obvious but just had to ask....maybe it's on the Apps menu...or can I create a start item pointing to XP and Back to W10.....Also a BIG thank you to Kari for showing me how to restart the XP install after it failed.....everything is so easy when you know how LOL

only installing this to run One program GSP money matters....will not run in W10 64 bit which came out in 1998 ish.....

To start XP you have to load the Hyper-V (whatever called) application where all virtual machines are listed. Click on XP and run it. It should open a new window with the virtual computer booting into Windows XP. To close it shut down Windows XP as usual and the window should close automatically at the end. Yes, there should also be an option to pin the application on your start screen if not there already.

thanks.....got it running, can't get it to go full scren approx 70% of the screen, with a black border, maybe that's the best I can hope for......need to read a USB pen, believe Remote Desktop is the way forward, but if I can get internet explorer to work then can use Dropbox to transfer files...

been told that it's best to set virtualisation in the bios to improve performance I have a gigabyte F2A88XM-D3H motherboard and AMD A10-6800K CPU tried searching if this has this option but could not find anything .....

also.....internet explorer not working in XP, can't connect, although the XP activation worked, which I assume needed an Internet connection....

thanks for for all the help and the crossed fingers definitely work....

To increase the screen size and eliminate the black borders, you have to increase the resolution. Right-click on the desktop, select Properties to see Display Properties. If I remember correctly, resolution is at the Advanced section. Move the slider to the right to increase resolution and test results. If OK reply Yes to the question on screen. Have you installed the tools-drivers? Look at Hyper-V menus, I don't know how it is called but there should be an entry "Install...". Once you do you should have internet access and be able to copy-paste between Windows XP and Windows 10. Looking at the Advanced section in BIOS, the hardware virtualization is called Vanderpool, if I am correct. Enable that.

  7. will live with the screen size can't find hyper v tools / drivers....also can't find any advanced bios menu in gigabyte uefi dual bios....

will try try and get internet explorer working and can use drop box to copy files....I uninstalled the network card because of unrelated problems, maybe that broke the virtual link, will have a look....

feel like giving up on this.....don't have any virtual networks in network connections and when I try to create a virtual switch I get an error applying virtual switch properties.....or maybe I should start all over again .......must be a way of fixing this....

UPDATE uninstalled the host network adapter then tried again and created a virtual switch which now shows in network connections, but still no internet explorer....

think I have set up the network switch and legacy adapter again.....but in the XP device manager there is no network devices......should there be ?.....there are two unknown devices and video controller VGA compatable....

UPDATE 2 can't believe it Internet explorer is working in XP.....but no network adapter showing in XP device manager plus to unknowns......

    UPDATE 3

internet explorer not displaying certain sites such as box.net, can't think why

    help please.....

The download site for your motherboard is here and the manual is here. According to your manual page 37, to enable hardware virtualization (assuming your CPU supports it) you go to M.I.T. section and you enable SVM mode (could be already enabled by default).

As for Internet Explorer 6 (I presume) can display less than half the modern websites because it lacks many features. You can download and install Internet Explorer 8 (last for XP) but this is limited too compared to newer browsers. The best is to upgrade to IE8 which will also upgrade some XP components and make it more compatible with newer stuff, and also install Firefox for your everyday browsing. Also install Flash from here to make the browser more useful. You have to do it separately for IE and for Firefox since a different plugin is installed at each browser. Have you tried to copy a file from Windows 10 and paste it in Windows XP and vice versa? This should work, unless you haven't installed the tools.

  10. wow thanks so much for that info, explains so much, will look for SVM mode, but got a feeling I saw that and it was enabled.....
no idea where these tools are, can't find a menu to download them.....
younhave been so helpful......the device manager in XP shows the graphic card VGA compatable, can this be updated to the same as the host OS ? also there are two unknown devices.....should I worry about them ?

    thanks again

No, the graphics card is a virtual VGA, not the same as your physical hardware. To install tools, go to the Action menu and select Insert Integration Services setup disk. I saw this in a tutorial for older Hyper-V version, but I hope it is the same in your case. Once you do that VGA, LAN and audio will be installed and work OK.

  12. thanks, SVM mode already enabled, found it in advanced frequency settings then advanced CPU core settings, was a bit hidden...thanks, working on the rest now

do you think it's safe to remove the two unknown devices from XP device manager..

After installing driver they may be identified and installed. It is safe to remove but until you install drivers for them they will reappear. To find out what they are you can use the utility Aida64. Load it and go to Devices area, Windows Devices. It should tell you what they are, so you can find drivers, if necessary.

  14. re.....Action menu and select Insert Integration Services setup disk......can't find this, unless it appears when the virtual machine is stopped...will check later, just updated IE to IE8 and installed chrome, it's Amazon how many sites refuse to open in IE6.....updating XP from a site called wsusoffline.net where all the updates for XP are kept, I am running the program but excluded SP's as mine already up to SP3 but it's downloading and installing all XP updates since SP3......should help a bit.....when finished I will check the action menu again...will look at aida64.....i usually copy and paste the device ID, but hopefully this will be quicker and better

thanks again for all your help and support.....really appreciate it....

UPDATE after downloading all the updates wsusoffline.net it said it wasn't compatable with VXP....which I assume dans virtual XP
Stopped virtual machine and the option under action menu is still not there.....wonder how I get these files....

Look all the menus for something along the lines "Install" or "insert". You can also use the good old Windows Update if you go to IE 8 (doesn't work in other browsers) and go to the address http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...6/default.aspx Hopefully it still works. If you see one or two upgrades marked as they should be installed separately from the others, do these first to avoid issues and then go to the address again and install the rest. You may have to go several times until you install all the available updates and nothing is missing. Depending on your software you may also need to install Microsoft .NET component. It is version 1.1 through version 4.0 (last compatible with XP). In theory you can only install version 4, but I always install them all from 1.1 to the next to make sure there is no application that will try to use older files not present in newer versions and fail. I know it is a lot of work to find and install all these updates, that's why I have them all at my USB hard disk. I don't have to download each time, I just install them.
