thanks again....how big are all these files on your USB HDD ? suppose it's a cheek but wonder if you use drop box or box.net and could upload them for me to download .......as I said it's a bit of a cheek asking, I am sure I can find them all..

PS all I have in action menu are, connect, settings, turn off, shut down, save, pause, reset, checkpoint, move, export, rename help......
PPS http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...6/default.aspx just tells you to turn on auto updates..

wish someone one had an ISO of post SP3 update, would be handy

Don't be afraid... Google is your friend! Use it!

    Found with Google:

    .NET version 1.1
    .NET version 2.0 SP2
    .NET version 3.0 SP1
    .NET version 3.5 SP1
    .NET version 4.0
Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP
Service Pack 3 for Windows XP

The last two you may already have them installed but it doesn't hurt to archive them for future use.

To make sure you have all .NET components and all programs will find the required files, I recommend installing all .NET versions starting from 1.1 to 4.0. Each newer version updates the previous one with more functionality. It is tempting to just install version 4.0 but I have encountered some programs looking for files from older versions and not working properly. Of course you cannot install an earlier version when a newer version is already installed! You must install the earlier first.

If you also wanted to play games (if that is possible in Hyper-V) you may also need to install latest DirectX Runtime. Running the file will ask you for a folder to extract the setup files. To actually install DirectX browse to that folder and run DXSETUP. Of course you should first install the virtual VGA driver. Don't look only in the action menu. Look in all the menus. Search Help about it.

Hmm, the guy gathered all the latest Windows XP updates before end of support in one unofficial Service Pack! Good job! I'll download that too so I have less work to do next time I install Windows XP. Too bad it is for English Windows XP only and cannot be used with another language version. In that case I can install English Windows XP Professional and then add the Greek Language Pack if I want (cannot be added in the Home version). It's better than nothing! Thank you.

  7. well although I managed to copy and paste text from XP to Host OS couldn't copy paste a file... I burnt the SP4 ISO's to 2 CD's when ran they extracted to a folder.....now can't see how to install the updates, hoped to see a setup.exe file..used aida64 ( says shareware but with a 39 day trial ??? ) the two unknown devices are to do with Hyper-V so nor problem....
    UPDATE
the SP4 files are not exactly installed, they are simply copied to the installation folder, which I assume is WINDOWS....also there is another file depending on if I have XP pro K, N or KN whatever that means....have emailed for clarification.....

I don't know what SP4 you have downloaded, but mine is a single file about 1GB that you simply run it. It automatically extracts the files in a temporary folder (takes some time) and then starts setup just like the previous official service packs. Google it again if you have not downloaded the proper file. I searched for "unofficial Windows XP SP4" and downloaded it from Softpedia. Don't worry about the unknown devices, if you don't use them anyway. Have you tried installing your software? How did it go? You should be able to copy-paste from Windows 10 and XP. You may also define a shared folder in Hyper-V so you can save to that and get the files directly in Windows 10 without copy-paste. See documentation.

  9. i downloaded a completely different version.....will now download the one you found, sounds a lot easier.....yes money matters installed first time and works perfectly....will try out the shared folder idea sounds good......used box.net to store files then opened in XP and downloaded them, very simple.....but shared folder would be easier......

    thanks

How about sharing a Windows 10 folder as usual (to all computers in the network) and access that from Network Places in XP?

  12. will try that thanks
but there is, I believe a built in option, the tutorials I have found start off by simply saying " create a shared folder in Hyper-V" but don't explain how

Did you mean from a different computer to my Hyper-V XP ?......but if I want a shared folder between the Hyper-V. and the host OS on the same computer I would I assume need a ' link' between the two OS's.....which is what I need a procedure for......I am sure Kari would know how....

I have absolutely not a faintest clue what you are talking about. Never heard about a "Hyper-V shared folder". The vm is exactly as any other computer, physical or virtual in your network and you share files between a vm and other machines in your network as you would share between two physical computers.

  14. There are several references on the internet about Hyper-V shared folders....maybe they are all confused !!!
How To Share A Folder In A Hyper-V Virtual Machine With The Host
here is an extract from such a post

    • Connect to the Hyper-V host that you want to share a folder with
    • Launch Virtual Switch Manager
    • Add a new Virtual Switch (or modify an existing one), setting the Connection Type to be on the Internal network
    • Edit the VM that you want to create a shared folder on and add a network card, connecting to the new switch
    • From within the VM, change the IP address of the new network connection to an IP address in the same subnet as the host you want to share your folder with
    • You may need to edit the network connection’s properties (then click on the Sharing tab) to Allow other network users to connect though this computer’s Internet connection
    • You may also have to allow File and Print Sharing in the Windows Firewall on the Hyper-V host so that the folder can be shared with the VM
    • Finally, on the VM setup a shared folder (exactly how to create a shared folder will depend on the version of the operating system of the VM)
The shared folders on the VM should now be visible on the Hyper-V host.

As I said, maybe these posts are all in error or are talking about something different, it just led me to believe such a feature was possible....

but a network shared folder on the same PC will be perfect for my needs

    • The article you linked to for instance says nothing about "Hyper-V shared folders". A feature like that simply does not exist.
    • There's no reason to set the vm to use an internal switch as told in that article, although that can be used if the vm does not need Internet connection. If the vm needs Internet connection it should use an external switch, instead of internal switch. An article stating that you need an internal switch to share folders on vm with host is worthless.
    • A vm is as I have already mentioned like any other computer in your network. Sharing is done as it's done between any two computers.
