How to Install Fonts in Windows 10

A font is a graphical representation of text that may include a different typeface, point size, weight, color, or design.

Windows comes with TrueType fonts and OpenType fonts installed. They work on a range of computers and printers and are compatible with a range of programs.

Font List Windows 10 - Typography | Microsoft Docs
    • Truetype fonts (.ttf/.ttc) - Can be scaled to any size and are clear and readable in all sizes. They can be sent to any printer or any other output device supported by Windows.
    • OpenType fonts (.otf) - Related to TrueType fonts, but typically incorporate a greater extension of the basic character set, such as small capitalization, old-style numerals, and more detailed shapes, such as glyph and ligatures. OpenType fonts are also clear and readable in all sizes and can be sent to any printer or other output device supported by Windows.
    • PostScript fonts - are fonts created by Adobe Systems that are smooth, detailed, and of high quality. They are often used for printing, especially professional-quality printing, such as books or magazines.
Starting with Windows 10 build 17704, you no longer need to be an administrator to install fonts.

When you right-click on a font file in File Explorer, youll see two options. Install for all users provides the past, system-wide install capability and requires an admin. But now there is another option: Install allows any user, including non-admin users, to install a font for their own use.

Often font files come within a compressed folder (that is, a .zip file). The Install context-menu option isnt available in File Explorer when you view the contents of a compressed folder, but you can double-click the font file within the compressed folder to open it in the font previewer, and that provides an Install button. In the past, the button in the font previewer had the security badge, and it would do a system-wide install, requiring an admin. Now the security badge is gone, and the Install button in the font previewer performs a single-user font install, which can be done by non-admins.

Starting with Windows 10 build 18312, Insiders can now drag and drop font files from File Explorer into the modern Settings > Fonts page to install them. After installation, click on the font in the Font page, to view the different font faces associated with the font and all the details of the font. You can also uninstall the font from this font details page. Drag and drop font installation by default is installed as a per-user font which does not require elevation, hence it will not be available for other users. To install the font for all users in the device, use the Install for all Users option by right clicking the font on file explorer.

This tutorial will show you how to install fonts for your account or all users in Windows 10.

If you install a TrueType font with exactly the same name as a PostScript font on the same computer, Windows won't know which one to access, which could result in a font type being altered. To avoid this, don't install different types of fonts with the same name.

Always scan fonts downloaded from websites for viruses and malware prior to installing them. It is advisable to only download fonts from trusted sources.
