Windows 10: Install HP laserjet 4L

I have an HP laserjet 4L, which is of course nearly 30 years old but is still a really good printer. I have had it working very well in W10 installed over W7, but needed to do a clean install of W10, and now cannot install the driver, because it is kernel mode. I have tried all the hacks of group policy and registry entries which I have found trawling the internet, but W10 still refuses to install. Has anyone found a way to override the block on installing kernel mode drivers in the current edition of W10?

windows10 -I cannot re-install printer hp laserjet 4l

After downloading Windows 10 some months ago, I successfully installed the HP Laserjet 4L printer and have used it many times. Just today, after the printer stopped responding, I removed it and then tried to re-install it without success. When I try to
download a new driver Windows tells me the proper driver is already installed. Any suggestions ?

Anyone have a HP LaserJet 4L working with Windows 10?

I have not upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 because I doubt there is a compatible driver for my HP LaserJet 4L.

The 4L is a fabulous workhorse even tho it is 20yrs old.

The MS recommendation repeatedly shows on my computer saysingthat my system is
"Good to Go" including printers.

But I can't find any driver on the internet
or from HP that claims it can make the HP4L will work with Windows 10.

So ... Anyone have a HP LaserJet 4L working with Windows 10?

Please post a link to the software+drivers page for that printer to save everybody else having to search for it.
e.g.

• HP LaserJet 4 Plus/m Plus Printer series
• HP LaserJet 4L/mL Printer series
• HP LaserJet 4/4m Printer series

I agree with trying a replacement cable first.
If it was my printer then I would next try uninstalling the whole software package for this printer [including its driver] and then reinstalling the whole lot [including its driver].

Do you know which update messed things up?
Are any errors shown in Device manager, 'Control panel, Devices & printers'?
