Install OS on Skylake M/B, No Drivers to See HDD

Trying to install either win7, 8 and 10 onto a new build.

Motherboard = Gygabyte Z170 Gaming K3 (Skylake platform)

No, reading a good few websites i need to add an updated set of drivers to either the USB stick when creating an boot usb media

or i believe win 10 has these already in the setup files? (can somebody confirm?)

anyway, no matter what i've tried, i can't get any OS to see the HDD

Move System Restore Partition to different drive

    Prelude

I recently chose to migrate from a 1Tb spinning disk to a 128Gb m.2 + 1Tb HDD, with OS & programs installed on the m.2 and data on the HDD.

I didn't have time to do this as a dedicated task, so needed to keep the previous Windows 10 Pro installation on the old drive to use while I got the new OS set up in my spare time. Incidentally the previous installation was 32-bit, whereas the new one is 64-bit.
This all went off without a hitch, I ran both OS in parallel, got the new one set up and configured, and decided that I'm ready to delete the old installation and clean the 1Tb drive so that it's ready to become a data drive.

Unfortunately I then discovered the System Reserved Partition on the HDD.

    Current state

Currently my drives are partitioned like so:

    - Disk 0: [500mb System Reserved] [931Gb NTFS; old OS]

    - Disk 1: [119Gb NTFS Bitlocker Encrypted; new OS]

    - Disk 2: [14.91 OEM Partition]

Disk 2 is another m.2 which was included with the machine as a cache drive.

I want to move the System Reserved partition off the 1Tb drive, partly for neatness and to allow me to swap-out the data drive if desired, and partly for boot speed (by putting it on an m.2). Since the cache drive software for Disk 2 is incompatible with Bitlocker,
and since I'm running most functions from an m.2 anyway, I'm perfectly happy to format Disk 2 - it seems like a prime candidate for the System Reserved partition. Especially as I would rather not mess around with resizing the Bitlocker-encrypted partition.

    My question

    So, my question is:

Given that the System Reserved partition is very important (my main OS is currently encrypted, but could be decrypted for this process if necessary); and I don't want to go through another clean install if at all possible...

Is it possible to simply move the System Reserved partition in place to the small m.2, and completely clean the HDD? Would moving it like that affect boot and/or Bitlocker? If so, what is the best way to accomplish it - would I need to disconnect the HDD and
repair the installation or something like that? Would I need to decrypt first?

    Thank you!

  3. Moving Windows 10 from a large HDD to a small M.2 SSD and preserving Microsoft Office and other software.

Ok, so I am currently running my Windows 10 on a 2TB HDD that is old and loud and halfway full of important data. My motherboard supports M.2 storage, so I decided to finally order an M.2 drive with the goal of having it serve as home to my OS while I store
all of my other data on the old 2TB HDD.

    My questions are:

    A) Once I install Windows 10 on the M.2 drive, what happens to all of the old Windows related system files that were on the HDD? Will I have to clean that up?

    B) More importantly, what happens to my programs, such as Microsoft Office which I no longer have the install key for? Will my programs still run off of the HDD? Am I headed for some sort of disaster?

    Thanks,

    Greg

Install OS on Skylake M/B, No Drivers to See HDD

I had a similar problem when I installed my SSD, I had to unplug my other drives for the installer to see and use the SSD.

i only have the 1 drive plugged in.

just found this from a REDDIT post

    • Boot into a live linux system (with GParted or similar tool), I had ubuntu 14.04 ISO lying around. I won't instruct you on how to build a bootable USB stick with linux (I personally use DriveDroid on Android).
    • Once in the live system, open GParted and create a new NTFS partition of at least 4.5 GB.
    • Right click on your new partition in GParted and select "manage flags" and tick the "boot" checkbox.
    • Now (still in the live system) unpack your windows 7 ISO onto the new partition
    • Reboot out of your live system and unplug your USB disk.
    • Depending on how many sources and partitions you have, you might have to change your boot order to boot from your new partition, and your Windows 7 install should begin.
When installation is complete, you can delete your 4.5 GB partition.

I'm just making a ubuntu usb drive to see if this works.

if not, i've another new HDD to try, what a PITA this is

i find it strange that even installing win 10 from a new downloaded ISO still gives me this problem
i thought it was only a win7 problem???

An alternative to try to get a completely clean install is to try Kyhi's recovery drive from a USB flash drive or CD/DVD:
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums

Read my quote in the middle of the op of that thread for more info. If Kyhi's recovery drive recognizes you HDD/SDD, then you can just run setup.exe from a Windows 7 or 10 installation media - or just mount a Windows 7 or 10 ISO file and run setup.exe from that. Then you can clean install to a completely blank hard drive.

Install OS on Skylake M/B, No Drivers to See HDD

today, after trying a ubuntu & mint distro, both didn't get anywhere in running live.

i used a win8 disc, still couldn't see the HDD due to requiring the right drivers.
did a repair with the win8 disc and then on my next reboot/install it seen the system reserved partition and the un-allocated drive, but.......

i now get this message (which is a step forward)

Select Drive options (advanced) to enable more options on the screen and delete all the partitions, install to the unallocated space and let Windows create the needed partitions.
