Windows 10: Install over Windows 7 has problems - can I reinstall over Windows 7

Hello again - and thanks so much for the detailed instructions - much appreciated. Following them made creating a new User Account a snap. It has Administrator privileges. While in that account, I ran sfc /scannow and it found corrupt files - but fixed them all. Then I went into my original Account and ran sfc - and it didn't find any corrupt files. We're making progress!! However, in both User Accounts, the Taskbar and Desktop continue to blink. In the new Account, just the Taskbar rose and resided about once every minute (I use auto-hide). In my original account, the Desktop blinks when the Taskbar rises and resides. By blinking - I mean the Desktop icons disappear and reappear in a blink of an eye. The Taskbar usually rises with no icons in the Notification area or the System Tray. I have to wait for, perhaps 30 seconds for them to appear. Do you have any ideas as to what to do next? Talk tomorrow!! Thank you for sticking with me.

 

Go to Dell and see what Windows 10 Graphics drivers they have for your computer. If they have none, see what Windows 8/8.1 drivers they have. Make sure there are no Windows Updates for you to install.

Also, see what happens. Transfer all of you personal documents, music, pictures and such from you old user account to you new user account you just created. Make sure you have them all. Then delete your old user account. See if that changes anything. SFC fails in the old account but not in the new account, if I understand you correctly. I'm not sure why, but that has to mean something is wrong with the old account.

Thought I might offer some suggestions - this is a real strange bird, to be sure.

Remove Avast completely. Let Windows Defender protect the PC for now.
Uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs. If you have difficulty uninstalling it, see here:
Avast Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for Avast Removal
Please follow the instructions to boot the system into safe mode to effect the removal properly.


Let's make absolutely sure the system is not infected, so please run these two tools and post the logs using the "#" code box:

ADWCleaner

So the newly-created administrative account is corrupt? Please go into this account, open an admin command prompt and enter the following code:
Code: findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"[/quote] This will place a text file on the desktop called sfcdetails.txt. Please also post that file.

This is strange. Normally, I would expect just the opposite.

Until we get this resolved, please turn off auto-hide taskbar.

Please type reliability history in the search box and open the Reliability History tool. Post a screenshot of the most recent day with a red X on it, showing the errors below - widen the columns if necessary so we can read them.






Let's see if there are any clues in here.

Graphics drivers could be an issue as well. Open Device Manager, expand the Display Adapters, select your graphics, right-click and select update driver>search online. See if anything installs that way. If not, go to the OEM support site, and check there as @essenbe suggests.

Hello! While I'm on hold in getting the information you requested, could you folks recommend a Windows 10 manual for me. My expertise is way above "Windows for Dummies" but not expert like you guys. I'm an Intermediate. Need something easy to read but comprehensive. Something like "The Manual that should have been included with Windows 10." Thanks..........

I haven't read it myself, but it looks pretty comprehensive. Personally, most everything I ever wanted to know about Windows 10 has come from this forum, and the tutorials posted here. *Wink

I followed the "Dism" commands that you provided and here are the results. Please give me your opinion. I'm still planning on a clean install but would like to learn some things as I go along. I have never heard of the Dism function.
