  2. Slow Wi Fi speed after free upgrade to windows 10 on my windows 8.1 laptop

After installing my free upgrade to windows 10 from windows 8.1 on my laptop the Wi Fi has slowed down from 13mps download to 3.7rmps and is very erratic. it is OK when connected to Ethernet.

I have tried updating the Wi Fi adapter driver ( latest driver installed ), then uninstalled the driver and windows reinstalled it ( no change still slow ). All other devices using the Wi Fi are all OK and read 13mps.

    Please help.

If all works with the drivers provided by MS that's fine.
Do not bother to update them manually, and in particular, do not use driver scanner tools.

However- if you experience difficulties, a few find they need to take special action to use an older version of a driver.
A few find a driver is not supplied.

  5. i'd avoid windows update for drivers. as for scanner tools really depends on which one. i use driver navigator and never an issue.

That makes no sense. When you install Windows it installs drivers. In your opinion, what, in general, has MS got wrong here?

There have been several threads here where major contributors on this forum have advised against the use of driver scanners.

Put another way, what benefit have you gained by maintaining drivers yourself? Only if you have a problem should you need to take action in this area.

Windows 10 is by some referred to as a smart OS.....it finds the correct drivers from vendors directly. If it can't then it will use it windows generic drivers. It's always recommended to use vendor specific drivers for hardware for proper functionality.

If it's an OEM (HP, Dell) then use their driver/support site to download drivers and if it's a custom build, use the mobo vendors driver/support site for drivers.

for years microsoft couldn't get drives right and everyone knows it. now that they actually get drives right the majority of the time they only do the driver and none of the utilities that come with them. driver navigator downloads the entire software package from the manufacture including the drivers. now to each their own, but i just built a new system and it's stable and solid and one of the first things i did was to disable windows update from downloading and installing drivers and to install and use driver navigator. if you just care about the base drives and nothing else then use windows update. i like to have the suite and using dn keeps me from having to bounce allover the net to get my driver updates.

Software you're talking about costs money and there are some reports about, well, not so perfect customer care out there.
I wouldn't put that on my PC. But, if it suits you...

Goin to manufacturer site and download drivers you need shouldn't be too difficult. And you know, what are you using.

  10. You'll gat yes an no's on that one. I'm fine with what I get via Windows update. All my hardware works just fine and I don't need the extra utilities installed by the OEM driver packages. IMHO, most of it is bloat I don't need or want. If your a gamer it may make sense to go looking for the latest video driver etc.
IMHO, those driver update utilities are just snake oil. A complete waist of time and money. Most will tell you there are newer versions, then want money to download and install them. The really bad ones will exaggerate what's out of date, and even install the wrong ones. Plus, good luck ever getting your money back. Buyer beware IMHO. You can do that all yourself for free, with a little time and elbow grease.

  11. The only time I go looking for a driver manually is if I have something flagged with a yellow ! or Red X in device manager.
