Windows 10: Installing a new hard disk drive in windows 10 due to a failing one.

So I got a boot usb drive inserted my new drive took out both old ones as I had a 100/c drive usage in my old cpu. Then I turned on the computer and got thru a few prompts then stated that my 1 tb hdd had 0mb and that my hard disk drive cannot be installed with windows 10. and there are no buttons to push to state that I have a new hard drive, there is no next. so I cannot click on next and am using a backup laptop for now. I would like to salvage this computer, and would wonder if windows 10 could ever be installed on this machine. it is a dell experion from 2014 and run fine till about a month ago. it is hard to give computer specs on a machine that will not install a new hard drive, so sorry about this if you want more help. thanks for reading. I would rather be doing things with my computer than typing this.

Install Windows 10 on new hard drive.

Please be informed that you cannot install the activated Windows 10 on to the new hard disk.

If you are replacing the hard disk then you may get Windows 10 activation errors.

If you are purchasing a new hard disk then, you may have to install genuine Windows 7 (SP1)/8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10 to get Windows 10 activated.

I suggest you to run check disk on the hard drive to see if there are any corruptions.

Follow the below steps:

• Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin).
• Command Prompt, type the following command, and then press
  ENTER:

chkdsk /f

Disclaimer: While performing check disk on the hard drive, if any bad sectors are found then check disk will try to repair that sector. Any data available on a bad sector might be lost.

Once Check Disk completes, boot the computer and then check.

W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

- press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
- diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
- list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
- select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
- clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
- create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
- exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
- click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that

 

Failing hard drive and disk migration

Hi All,
I hope you are well.
I have a laptop with Windows 10 where I suspect the hard drive is failing - Samsung Momentus 750GB
I have noticed that because the system is slow and in Task ManagerI can see hard drive working hard 100% most of the time with pretty low transfer speeds.
I have looked and followed the instructions how to improve this, but none of the steps helped against this terrible slowness.

I have used ddrescue software to clone the failing disk to the identical brand new Samsung hard drive.
I have followed the ddrescue advise and run the whole procedure twice including report log.

The whole process of course has finished with some errors.
I have swapped the disks but at bootup I got "Operating System not found"

I have run Windows 10 installation disk and run a Startup Repair, but it said that it could not succeed and I still got "Operating System not found"

What would you suggest to do next, reinstall from scratch?
This is originally Windows 10 in French and I had to spend time to convert it to English.
If I somehow extract the serial number from it can I install Windows 10 in English and use this serial number or will it work only in French version and do I have to go through this process again?
