Windows 10: Installing Net Framework 3.5 in Windows 10 S

I made that point at my post #2, what you have not made it clear Dism command can be executed from Windows 10 ISO image this was my point.

 

...it will have to be something like this then?
DISM /Image:C:\Windows /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:X:\sources\sxs

 

That command can be use from Windows Recovery Environment not from booted online Windows OS.

 

Well yah!, We can't run commands within the online image in Win 10S.

FYI: Changing to Pro has no effect on apps - still has the restrictions. This is really a crap edition.

Yup but it's blocked within Windows itself...

One can get to it via Advanced options tho...(WinRE.)

Does Hyper-V even work on 10 S? I honestly have no idea but here it says not

I do not know, but you can use the option to install it but it fails saying you need .net 3.5 which prompted my post.
However thinking about it even if you get it installed, you could not modify the bcd to run the hypervisor.

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto

I cannot say if that applies to everybody but certainly does need to be run on my pcs.

So I guess it running Hyper-V is not an option in 10S at least on my devices.

It would have been neat if you could as you could run win32 apps in a vm.

Just a query here - never actually heard of W10 S -- is this going to eventually be like an embedded OS for Diskless workstations etc or is that idea of an embedded OS totally dead. Sorry if OT here but I'm curious.

It is a version that cannot run win32 apps, and is more security locked down. It is primarily targeted at the education market and is seen as a competitor for chromebooks. It is much harder to infect such a device with malware. It is generally expected it is going to be installed on lower end very cheap laptop/notebooks.

One idea is that Universities will buy a batch of devices and distribute them to students who will not be able to "tamper" with the devices, minimising risk of viruses, malware etc.

However, I can see a market for those "click happy" members of your family (not just elderly by the way) who regularly infect PCs.

Apart from only running UWP apps, one downside is you have to use Edge as your browser.

Thanks for explanation -- Suggest another strategy for Ms -- if Windows Defender or any other Virus scan shows malware then automatically convert to W10 S !!!!!!

-I'll bet that would cause some problems !!! but it would be amusing to see reactions on users faces when they try and install something. !

I'm surprised though Net 3.5 is mandatory for HYPER-V - cheap / low end PC's usually don't run Virtual machines. Also I would have thought that latest Ms software would use Net framework 4.7 - but there it is I suppose.

I still also think that Windows 10 S might have a sensible use in Diskless workstations. These aren't as crazy as might be supposed --I'd much rather use one of those with a monitor etc than mess around connecting to a network or Virtual machine using RDP / VNC or whatever.

Have you tried from Windows 10 S to connect to a remote server -- and does it allow local peripherals such as USB / DVD / Printer. It would also have to allow Wireless or LAN (or both) but those could be embedded on the mobo of the diskless workstation. Boot W10 S from a USB would also be good too.
