Windows 10: Installing Software in support of GPS devoce

I have a Garmin 50LT that needs periodic update of it's map data. With my previous pc running Windows 8.1, all I had to do was connect the device to the USB and it would load up the software necessary to connect with Garmin.com and provide status of the s/w already on the device and let you know if it was up to date or if there was updated map data.


If the device was up to date no further action was needed but if there were updates to the data you could download the information to get it up to speed.


With this version of Windows, when I plug the device into the USB port it starts up and appears to be uploading the Garmin Express program to my pc. However when it completes it's upload, Windows does not execute the initialization to run the program which allows you to update the database. It just sits there after opening a window which shows the Garmin folder. It looks to me like it has just created a temporary file folder with all the program information, but it fails to initiate the program. No error code is displayed, nothing, it just sits there.


garmin support lists a number of steps to be taken but doesn't give any instructions as to how you are to do them. Windows 10 is so wrapped up in protection and security that I don't know where to begin. I think the program is prohibiting the Garmin s/w from actually writing the files where it can be executed and I can find no istructions that would guide me to making any changes that would allow the Garmin s/w access to the files written in temporary storage, where ever that is!


All I want to do is to be able to update my GPS periodically to keep it's maps up to date. What do I need to do to be able to install the Garmin Express s/w on my pc?

Just install PlayOnLinux? Why did they make step 2 and 3 of this "tutorial"?

Anyway, looking at the supported software list for PlayOnLinux, D3 is a step in the right direction. Lack of gaming is a factor for a lot of people when deciding on an OS, if more recent games get ported it may help migrate them to their preferred choice.

 

GPS Location With Time Stamp Software?

My step-mother just bought some cheapo portable GPS from Best Buy. has a camera onboard and stamps the images as you request. Saves them on the GPS, but can be easily offloaded at the end of the day. I want to say it was a budget model Garmin.
