  1. Installing Windows 10 on an SSD via USB to SATA adapter

I have a laptop that I want to upgrade to Windows 10. The laptop does not have a CD-ROM drive, unfortunately. What I want to do is use my desktop PC as the "host" and install the new Windows 10 Pro software to the SSD drive via a USB to SATA connector. My desktop recognizes the already formatted SSD drive.I'm concerned however that I might find myself installing Windows 10 to the desktop drive, which already has it. I also do not want to disconnect the old desktop drive, connect the SSD drive and install that way, as I expect when I then removed the SSD and installed it on the laptop I would f

  2. Install Windows 10 on SSD through SATA to USB?

I am stuck with a weird problem here. I am trying to install Windows 10 on an "old" Windows 7 desktop machine for a friend. I purchased an SSD for him, but when I try to install Windows through USB it says:

    I have tried:

    • Converting the drive to MBR and GPT
    • Diskpart -> clean -> create new primary partition -> mark as active
    • Remove all CD, SD, etc. drives from the motherboard (they don't appear in BIOS)
    • New SATA cable
    • Plug SSD into USB adapter and partition the drive on my desktop and mark it as active

However, none of these worked out for me. Very weird. Therefore I want to install Windows on the SSD through USB through my PC. I have a couple of SATA to USB adapters (with power and everything), so the drive basically appears as an USB drive in Windows. How would I go on about installing my Windows ISO on this drive through USB, without screwing up my partitions on my desktop PC?

    What I have:

    • Windows ISO
    • USB adapter to hook up the SSD to my desktop

Let me know what the best approach would be, to solve this issue would be. Thanks!

  3. Windows 10 USB boot

Hi there, am not a windows 10 expert. I have a pc in the bedroom on windows 10, I messed up the bootloader trying to fix the xp on that system.

System wont boot, trying to repair via win 10 usb installer.

Downloaded the media creation tool to install windows 10 installer on usb stick. Not compatible with a host of usb sticks I have. Tried the usb sticks that others use, but I think they use rufus; as the media creation tool by win 10 does not detect the usb stick.

So quick question, the win10 machine i am trying to repair the bootloader is a win7 upgraded to win10.
If i were to use the usb win10 installer to "repair installation" does the version of the iso downloaded via the media creation tool matter?

    There is three options:
    Windows 10
    Windows 10 Home
    Windows 10 N

Also is there a step by step instead of using rufus as I want to try an alternative method of creating a usb win 10 installer. Preferably with more compatibility.

    System is a asus sabertooth 990 (r2?) with AMD phenom X 6.

Also is there any other software I can load onto the usb that can repair the bootloader easily?
That would be the ideal alternative. Thanks

  4. Installing Windows 10 on an SSD via USB to SATA adapter

Are installed Windows interchangeable between SATA, USB, and NVMe?

Windows can be installed via SATA on HDD or SSD, via USB on HDD, SSD, or USB flash drive, or via NVMe on SSD. But are these installations interchangeable? For example, can Windows be installed via SATA and then used via USB? Activation might be the hiccup.

I'm asking about Windows 10, but I would like to know the answer for 7 and 8.1. Assume the installation involves a valid activation code.
