Windows 10: Installing Windows 10 Version 21H2 on External SSD

One of my laptops has an HDD with very old (The first version) of Windows 10 which is having all sorts of issues - Mainly its very slow because of old version of Windows as well as a slow HDD.

I want to install a new version of Windows on an external SSD & Dual Boot - The main reason being I do not want to open the laptop (It has never been opened) & remove the old HDD (It has lot of important frequently used files).

I want that I should be able to select via Boot Setup Menu which is the primary disk for booting - The Internal HDD with the old version or the External New SSD with the new version of Windows 10. So whenever I want Internal HDD I select that in the Boot Setup Menu & whenever I want SSD I select that from the Boot Setup Menu.

Thus my question is can Windows 10 be installed on an external SSD & Is this method of Dual Boot involving both Internal HDD & External SSD possible with both having different versions of Windows 10 (Old & New) respectively.

Update Windows 10 version 1909 to version 21H2

Can I Update Windows 10 version 1909 to version 21H2 (latest)?

Then Please send the useful steps to do that...

By changing windows version 1909 to 21H2 does it removes all files(music, videos, software,etc.) present in my laptop or it is safe, nothing will be deleted.

Now I am not getting critical updates for windows version 1909.

Please anybody give suggestion regarding this matter.

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

The Windows installer will probably refuse to install onto an external drive, because Microsoft removed the ability to do that, and they deprecated the 'Windows to Go' functionality.

There are a coupe of methods online for installing Widows on an external drive, but you would also run into licences problems, because Microsoft state, you need a separate licence for each installation.

When you install a second version of Windows 10 that should automatically create the boot loader to give you the choice of which operating system to boot into on Startup.
