Instantly locked out of Windows for booting into diagnostic mode

I am very angry at the stupidity of all this, but I'll try to keep it together. Let me start by saying this should not happen anymore, ever. It's a serious bug and judging from forums it's been going on since at least 2017. It's happened to me before in a similar situation from using msconfig. I will NEVER touch that command again. I'm kicking myself for not remembering, but why should I have to?I was just trying to install an anti-virus in Safe Mode because it was having trouble on normal boot. PC is fine, no malware or anything. Installer just was hanging for some reason. It couldn't downlo

  2. Locked in Repair/Diagnostic mode

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand the inconvenience caused. I will be glad to assist you with this.

Thank you for mentioning the different steps you have tried to fix the issue.

This issue occurs when you have multiple applications running at the same time, excessive startup entries, corrupted drivers etc.

I would suggest you to check if you are able to boot your computer in safe mode with networking follow the suggestions given below.

To boot your computer in safe mode with networking:

    1. Turn off your computer 3 times while booting. Windows should automatically boot to the Recovery Environment after 3 unsuccessful attempts in a row.

    2. Once you are within the Recovery Environment, select
Troubleshoot, and then Advanced options, then
    Startup Settings
    , and Restart.

    3. When it restarts, you should see a number of options. Press 5 or F5 for
    Safe Mode with networking

Once you are in safe mode, I would suggest you to check for updated drivers by following the instructions given by Andre Da Costa in the link below:

How to: Install and Update drivers in Windows 10

Also, I would also suggest you to check for any pending Windows updates and install it.

Once that is done, restart the computer and check if you are able to safely boot your computer.

Do get back to us with the result. We will be glad to help if you need further assistance.

  3. Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...

    Good Evening,
I could do with some pointers on resolving an issue. I can only boot into windows in safe mode in Windows 10. Normal mode and safe mode with networking doesn't work. The problem occurred after a windows update. I have removed the latest updates that were installed and cleared any pending ones but it still won't boot properly. I have also run the troubleshooter and tried to recovery to an earlier date which also doesn't work.
    The laptop is a HP ENVY 17 notebook. At boot it just gets to the HP logo with the circular loading icon and no further and can only boot it into safe mode. Can anyone recommend the next steps? I have also tried the following;

    • stopping startup items
    • uninstalling hardware drivers
    • removing recent software
    • running troubleshooters at boot
    • sfc scan
    • diagnostic/selective startups with minimal services running
Would the fact that I cant boot into Safe Mode with Networking imply its a network driver related issue?
Bit of a dead end really, any help would be much appreciated
    Kind regards
    Trevor

Instantly locked out of Windows for booting into diagnostic mode

SP4 - can't return to normal mode boot, stuck in diagnostic mode

I was having trouble installing a printer and wanted to boot in safe mode. However, I was an idiot and booted to diagnostic mode (with msconfig).

However, once restarted in diagnostic mode I can't even get to the desktop. I'm stuck on what's usually the login screen with no options to login. How do I get out of this and back to normal mode boot?

    Please help!!
