Windows 10: Integrated mouse and keyboard stopped working

My computer is a 4 year old Dell inspiration 15 3000 series laptop. I've been very careful with it: It's never been dropped, had any water damage, and I don't leave it on for long periods of time. It's stable; it doesn't typically crash.

This afternoon the screen went black and the computer became unresponsive. I hard-booted it and started the computer. When it came back up the keyboard and mouse were no longer working.

I did some trouble shooting. The Device Manager tells me that the mouse can't start and is giving me a Code10 error and says that {Device Timeout} The specified I/O operation on %hs was not completed before the time-out period expired.

I've tried updating the drivers. I tried deleting the drivers and reinstalling them. I've tried manually reinstalling the most current drivers. I've tried rolling back the update and using a previous version. None of these have made any change.


My integrated keyboard is also catatonic, but the device manager says it's functioning correctly. With the keyboard I've also tried updating drivers, uninstalling drivers, reinstalling drivers, reinstalling drivers manually etc.


My computer's OS is up-to-date. The computer works fine when used with a keyboard and mouse plugged in via USB.

Unresponsive Mouse and Keyboard in Windows 10

One reason why your mouse and keyboard is not working is because of an outdated driver. We suggest that you update the mouse and keyboard driver by following the steps below:

• Pres Windows+X key on your keyboard.
• Select Device Manager.
• Locate the mouse and keyboard drivers, right click, then click on Update.

External Mouse and Volume Keys on External Keyboard Stopped Working


I've been using an external mouse and keyboard with my laptop for a while now. A few days ago, the mouse stopped working. It's a wired mouse and the red light comes on when it's plugged in. At the same time, the top row of keys on my wired keyboard stopped working (the volume controls, mail button, home, customizable buttons, etc.). When I plug the mouse in, it appears under Other Devices in the Device Manager, listed twice as a USB Input Device. When I try to update the driver automatically, it says Windows was unable to. The mouse doesn't work in safe mode. I tried a wireless mouse as well and it doesn't work either. My external keyboard shows up under keyboards as an HID Keyboard Device and Windows says the best drivers for my device are already installed. I've tried all three USB ports and the mouse works on another computer. The built-in keyboard and touch pad on my laptop still work fine. What else can I do? Thanks in advance.
