  1. Integrated PDF Printer empty filename field

    Hi all,

I want to avoid 3rd part PDF Printer (any of them satisfy me) so I want to use the integrated printer that to me is very good.

I have a big issue though, when I want to save the PDF the window won't assign ANY filename, I have to WRITE it.

It's a big issue in my workflow, I print many PDF at-day they are from Excel and some webpages. I cannot write myself the name of the file each time!!!

It shoud assign a name based of the NAME of the webpage, the TITLE of the DOC file, the NAME of the XLS sheet I am using, etc. This should be the normal behaviour in fact every 3rd part software does it that way!!!

There is a way to achieve that?

    :)

  2. Programmatically set filename and path in Microsoft Print to PDF printer

I have a C# / .net program that creates various documents. These documents should be stored in different locations and with different, clearly defined names.

To do so, I use the System.Drawing.Printing.PrintDocument class in .net

I select the "Microsoft Print to PDF" as printer with this statement:

    PrintDocument.PrinterSettings.PrinterName = "Microsoft Print to PDF";

In doing so I'm able to print my document in a pdf file. The user gets a file select dialog. He can then specify in this dialog box the name of the pdf file and where to store it.

As the amount of files is large and it is annoying and error-prone to find always the correct path and name, I would like to set already the correct path and filename in this dialog box programmatically.

    I already tested these attributes:

    PrintDocument.PrinterSettings.PrintFileName

    PrintDocument.DocumentName

Writing the required path and filename to these attributes didn't help.

Does anybody know, how to set the default values for path and filename for the "Microsoft Print to PDF" printer in C#?

    My environment:

    Windows 10

    Visual Studio 2010

    .net 4.5

    Scan to PDF Window 10

You can scan into jpg files, then use Print - choose Printer "Microsoft Print to PDF". With Printer Properties you can choose Portrait or Landscape and a few other properties. Then it will ask for the filename. If you have more then one jpg that you want
to be part of your pdf select all desired jpg files in File Explorer, right click and choose Print. Then choose Printer "Microsoft Print to PDF".

No, I don't think you can for the Microsoft PDF printer. But did you know that from Office 2007 onwards you can 'Save as...' a PDF? This will save with the same name as the Excel spreadsheet or Word document by default.

Some programs can suggest a name in the Save As box and it may be a few words at the very beginning of a document, for example some versions of Word can do it, WordPerfect default is Document1, Document2, etc., depending upon files already in the Documents Folder but that is not helpful in describing the document. A lot of the file naming convention has been in use many years as no two files of the exact same name can exist in the same Folder.

  6. I totally disappointed with Microsoft and its printer as PDF function.

Not only you confirm that isn't possibile that a file name is suggested by default (slowing my workflow) and it's already not tollerable to me... but I also discovered something even worse... it will not keep the hypertext in the PDF created!!! I will never have active links in the PDF I create with Microsoft!!!

These two reason take me back in my searching of a thirty part of PDF Printer for Windows 10. I opened another thread for that but it didn't help me... I am still searching a good PDF Printer and I am worry that I won't find.

    What's your choise about it?

I have Adobe [not free] Acrobat 8 on a computer, Acrobat 9 on a Notebook and Acrobat 9 on my MacBook Pro but none of them automatically name files sequentially by their contents, only manually or by default according to what is in the Folder they are saved in. Adobe Acrobat can create new .pdf files from various formats that are on the computer such as .htm and will suggest the original file name with the extension of .pdf but I think that's about as close to automatic naming as I can get.

FreePDF as its name implies, it's free, bloat-free, pups-free and it usually does a good job. It requires Ghostscript to be installed.

And for it to properly work under w10: Unpack installer with 7zip or something like that. Manually run setup.exe (or setup64.exe on x64) as administrator. Then I usually run the installer itself (FreePDF4.14.EXE) by right-click and selecting "troubleshoot compatibility issues".

PS - You can even create custom Ghostcript profiles for it to print to other formats (I have created several TIFF options, one for faxing).
