Microsoft To-Do Tasks in Microsoft Teams coming soon

At Microsoft Ignite this year? Then you’ll have already heard the big news about Microsoft To Do and Microsoft Teams. Missed the announcement? We’ve got you covered. Today, we announced that you’ll soon be able to see your tasks from Planner and To Do in Teams. That’s right, one of your most requested integrations is on its way!

We’ll now bring in your personal tasks from To Do and your team tasks from Planner into a single, comprehensive view in Teams. This will be coming very soon for Teams Technology Adoption Program (TAP) IT admins and will become generally available for all Microsoft customers at the beginning of 2020.

You'll be able to access your tasks in two places in Teams: as an app in the left siderail and as a tab within individual teams. The app will show you all your tasks from To Do and Planner. The tab is for your team tasks, so links directly to Planner. You won’t be able to add a To Do tab to a channel but remember that any tasks that are assigned to you in Planner will show up in To Do.

Tasks in Teams sync with both To Do and Planner, so you’ll be able to access all your tasks within Teams. You can also add your personal tasks while you remember them within Teams and they’ll show up in your To Do app, ready to be checked off, with a satisfying “ding!”.

Whenever you add a new Tasks tab to a team a corresponding list is created within Planner. And with our new picker, whichever list you last viewed will appear at the top, giving you fast access to your most-pressing team tasks.

Our goal with Tasks in Teams is to give you one cohesive view of everything that needs to get done. We’re also hard at work bringing your tasks from Outlook and Office into Tasks in Teams too. Learn more about our overall tasks strategy here.

Talking of integrations, have you already tried these great ways to bring your tasks into To Do, and now Teams?

Outlook: Tasks in Outlook sync to To Do, you can also flag your emails and see them in your Flagged email list.

Microsoft Launcher: The native Tasks widget and To Do widget in Microsoft Launcher on Android sync with To Do.

Cortana: The Lists section in your Cortana notebook syncs with To Do. You can also tell Cortana to add tasks to To Do. Of course, once you have Tasks in Teams set up, they’ll also show up there.

Looking forward:

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint: starting from January, you will be able to add a task using @mentions in Word. The same functionality will be available in Excel and PowerPoint later in 2020.

Microsoft To-Do and Cortana integration in Windows 10

Microsoft To-Do helps you manage, prioritize, and complete the most important things you need to achieve every day, powered by Office 365 integration.

Now, with Cortana integration, you can save time and stay organized — Cortana helps by adding your reminders and tasks to your lists in Microsoft To-Do, so you can stay on top of what matters most. Use your voice, your PC, your phone — your choice.

Streamline your tasks — your lists and reminders from across Microsoft To-Do, Cortana, and tasks in Outlook can now become one — centrally located in your Microsoft To-Do app. Use Microsoft To-Do anywhere: on your Android or iPhone, with Cortana, or on your Windows 10 PC. You can also access Microsoft To-Do from the web. It’s automatically synced so you never miss a beat.

With this integration, we are furthering efforts to seamlessly sync your to-do lists across Microsoft To-Do, Cortana, and your Outlook tasks. Follow the quick steps below and give it a try. To share feedback, join the cohort or use the Feedback Hub.

Getting started

Your Windows 10 PC must be running Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18267+ and tied to either an Australia, India, US, or UK region. To sync your reminders and lists across Cortana, Microsoft To-Do, and Outlook, set up Outlook or Office 365 as a connected service in Cortana on your PC:

Cortana > Notebook > Manage Skills > Connected services

Select your account type:

Personal Microsoft account: select Outlook

Enterprise account: select Office 365

Click Connect.

Your reminders and lists across Cortana, Microsoft To-Do and Outlook will start syncing.

If you already have Outlook or Office 365 set up as a connected service in Cortana, initiate the sync by trying one of these actions:

Reminders: Cortana > Notebook > Organizer > Reminders or

Lists: Cortana > Notebook > Organizer > Lists

Then, sign into the Microsoft To-Do app or Outlook with the same personal or enterprise account you used earlier when setting up connected services in Cortana. All your reminders and lists will now be synced across Cortana, Microsoft To-Do and Outlook.

Things to try

Add items to a list

Open the Microsoft To-Do app on your PC and create a new list titled “Travel”.

Ask Cortana to add “Paris” to your “Travel” list.

Verify if “Paris” was automatically added to your “Travel” list on Microsoft To-Do.

Your accounts should sync automatically. If you need to force a sync, go to Microsoft To-Do app > click on your account name > Settings > Sync

Set reminders

Ask Cortana: “Remind me to call Dave in 2 minutes.”

Wait for the reminder. You should receive a Microsoft To-Do reminder, and a Cortana reminder.

The reminder should appear both in your Microsoft To-Do planned tasks and your Cortana To-Do lists.

In the Microsoft To-Do app and Cortana, you can also add a time reminder on any item in the lists.

Recall items on a list

Ask Cortana: “What is on my To-Do list?”

Try this with any other named lists. “What is on my Grocery list?”

Recall your reminders

Go to the Microsoft To-Do app and click on Tasks.

Create a new task and add to the Task list.

Click on the new task to edit.

Click on “Remind me” and set a reminder for later in the day.

Ask Cortana: “What are my reminders for today?”

Try with other query patterns such as “What are my reminders in the evening?” etc.

Known Issues

(last updated 12.18.18)
There are a few known issues we’re tracking to and working to resolve:

Works best when you disconnect Wunderlist from Cortana.

Location-based reminders can only be created in Cortana, while you can view them in your Microsoft To-Do app.

Attachments added with Cortana are only accessible in Cortana (won’t sync to Microsoft To-Do)

A list shared between multiple people in the Microsoft To-Do app will only appear in Cortana for the person who shared it. All members of the list can still access the list in Microsoft To-Do.

You may see duplicate notifications for a single reminder — from Cortana, Microsoft To-Do, and Outlook apps on your Windows 10 PC or iOS phone. Learn how to change notification settings in Windows 10

You may get “Too many reminders” error while setting up reminders using Cortana on a Windows phone. Delete some of the completed reminders as a workaround. Go to Cortana > Notebook > Reminders > History > Completed either on PC or Windows phone.

Microsoft Teams PWA preview available for Windows 10 S devices

Today at Build 2018, Microsoft Teams is announcing a range of new capabilities and integrations to build and manage tailored apps for your enterprise using the Teams developer platform. Extending the power of Office 365 and Microsoft Graph APIs, IT professionals can create, curate, and distribute an enterprise catalog of apps for Teams while automating team and channel management to fit your organization. Tailoring your teamwork is now even easier through new integrations and shared developer capabilities experiences with other Office 365 applications, including SharePoint and Outlook.

Build will continue the momentum developed in late March 2018 during Enterprise Connect, where Microsoft Teams celebrated its one-year anniversary and shared that over 200K organizations are using the platform. We also announced new capabilities coming to Teams later this year such as Cloud recording, Inline message translation, Background blur on video in meetings, Proximity detection for Teams meetings, Mobile sharing in meetings, and Cortana voice interactions for Teams-enabled devices, all supporting our vision for Intelligent Communications (check out the most recent updates for May)

At Build we are excited to announce the preview of the Teams app for the Microsoft Store. This release marks an important step in our ongoing efforts to support Progressive Web App (PWA) capabilities in Windows, using Edge based rendering and combining web technologies with native OS capabilities to deliver an innovative new experience. As a Store app, it is installed and managed through the Microsoft Store, supports the Narrator screen reader, and integrates with the Windows 10 Action Center. For Public Preview, the Teams Store app is only available for Windows 10 S / S-mode devices.

We continue to add new capabilities on a regular basis to make Teams an even more powerful hub for teamwork. For customers pushing the boundary of teamwork and mixed reality , learn more about the Microsoft Remote Assist announcement from earlier today at Build.

This week at the conference, we’ll be focusing on opportunities in four areas to “do more” with tailored Teams apps:

Get Started – Today you can use tabs to bring content into conversations, check out the following features that provide you more control over your content

Apps in Chat—coming soon to developer Preview, you can now update your app so that it can be used in private 1:1 and group chats. Your users can add a tab or chat with a bot in their private chats to light up new collaboration and sharing scenarios.

SharePoint pages in Teams—SharePoint is now even more deeply integrated into Teams—with the latest integration you can pin a SharePoint page in your channels to enable deeper collaboration around sites and other SharePoint content, and get the full power of the SharePoint app platform within Teams.

Teams App Studio – debuted in January in preview, Teams App Studio streamlines and automates the development process for creating Microsoft Teams apps by helping you to define your app’s manifest through simple forms, In the next few months Teams App Studio will be able to save your app manifest in the cloud and provide in-app registration with Microsoft Bot Framework.

Enhance Conversations – Today you can use Azure bot services for natural language interaction and provide structured commands through messaging extensions, check out these new features to enhance conversations

Adaptive card support—coming soon to developer Preview, you can now send rich Adaptive cards from your bot, connector, or messaging extension. Adaptive cards allow you to send more flexible content in conversations and are supported on other Microsoft platforms such as Outlook, Windows, and Cortana.

Files support for bots—coming soon to developer Preview, your bot can now send and receive files in 1:1 chats with users. Enable content and document scenarios such as expense reports, file management, and image processing.

Distribute and manage your teams and apps – Make your apps available to users with the right controls. Check out the following new features to customize your teams within the enterprise

Tailored Teams created through the New Teams APIs in Microsoft Graph—use enhanced Microsoft Graph APIs to programmatically manage Teams resources and content including teams, channels, and conversations. We will be releasing the following APIs from preview to General Availability this summer: creating and deleting teams and channels; adding and remove team members and owners; and updating team and channel properties.

Enterprise app sharing through Teams enterprise catalog for apps - control access to custom Teams apps and distribute apps to users within the organizations by publishing to your company’s catalog in the Teams app store. Manage the catalog via PowerShell cmdlets, Graph APIs, and even through the Teams client itself.

Try the new features and provide feedback using the feedback link in the lower left corner of Microsoft Teams.
