Windows 10: Intel Dual-Band 8260AC PCIe not found in Win10, found in Ubuntu

TL;DR Ubuntu finds and uses a PCIe Wifi card just fine, but Windows can't find it. (Apparently needs USB header connection on MB?)

Long Version:
I use a PCIe card with the Intel Dual Band 8260AC chipset. The interesting part is that it has a USB 2.0 header on it that you're supposed to plug into a header on the MB. I had it installed this way previously and it was working fine til last night. I upgrade my CPU/MB/RAM, but the new MB is one USB 2.0 header short. The old MB had 3, all filled, but the new MB has only 2 USB 2.0 headers and 1 USB 3.0 header, so one device is left out. I decided to leave the wifi card plugged into the PCIe slot, but not plugged into a MB header and fire it up and make sure everything else was working.

No surprise, but I had no wifi. Figured maybe a new driver might solve the issue as it seems weird to need both a PCIe slot and a USB connection. So I dug out a USB wifi dongle I had and proceeded to update/install every possible driver, BIOS, etc. for the new MB and the wifi card. Still nothing.

Just out of curiosity I rebooted into Ubuntu (latest 17.10), and voila! Wifi worked! I removed the USB dongle just to make sure, but it definitely works just fine in Ubuntu, but Windows 10 cannot find the device. This is without the USB connection BTW. I've installed and reinstalled the driver, but no dice.

Any thoughts on getting Windows to recognize the card without the USB header connected? And any thoughts on why Ubuntu can find and use the device just fine while Windows seems unable to?

Secure Connection Failed

Uninstall these two:

- Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

- Intel Dual Band Wireless -AC 3160

 

Windows 10 Pro turns on tablet mode - make it stop!

Right click on Intel(R)dual band wireless-ac3165 and select properties

look for a Power Management tab

do the same for Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

 

Huh. So it seems Windows doesn't recognize it even with the USB header plugged in. This is annoying.

 

The USB header is only used for Bluetooth.

Do you see any unknown devices in Device Manager?

 

Ah, gotcha. No, no unknown devices. Last night I had to manually install drivers the old fashioned way with "Add legacy hardware".

Update:
Manually installed drivers again as per above. Device Manager gives me this:
"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)


The request is not supported."

 

Can you run SIV (SIV - System Information Viewer), click on PCI Bus, and copy+paste the contents here?

Can you also post the output of lspci in Ubuntu?

 

Yes. I'll need a minute before I reboot. Working on reactivating Windows after all the hardware changes too.

That's very weird. For some reason Windows isn't enumerating bus 4 where your WiFi card is. But there is one PCIe lane assigned to it so the card is being detected by the chipset.

Did you move the hard drive from the old mobo directly to the new one? Have you tried updating the Intel chipset drivers?

In SIV can you click on the [0 - 28 -6] and copy+paste the contents? It should look like:

I did move the SSDs and HDD directly over to the new MB and I updated all the drivers and the BIOS. Here are the results from SIV:

Unfortunately I'm not seeing anything wrong. One more thing to check if you would indulge me:

1. In SIV, click on [0 - 0 - 0] and look for "PCIE Express Address... PCIEXBAR." The address is usually 0xE0000000 or 0xF0000000.
2. Download RWEverything (Download RWEverything) - you can get the portable version if you don't want to install it.
3. In RWEverything click on Access->Memory. Click on Address and enter the address from #1 plus 0x400000. So if you get 0xE0000000 in step 1 then enter address 0xE0400000.
4. Take a screenshot like:




Then can you try going to Device Manager, right-click on System Devices->PCI Express Root Port #7, and hit Uninstall. Then hit Scan for Hardware Changes.
