Windows 10: Intel Expands Manufacturing Capacity with 10nm Creative Improvements

In response to incredible customer demand, Intel has doubled its combined 14nm and 10nm manufacturing capacity over the past few years. To do this, the company found innovative ways to deliver more output within existing capacity through yield improvement projects and significant investments in capacity expansion. This video recounts that journey, which even included repurposing existing lab and office space for manufacturing.

âOver the last three years, we have doubled our wafer volume capacity, and that was a significant investment. Moving forward, weâre not stoppingâ¦ We are continuing to invest into factory capacity to ensure we can keep up with the growing needs of our customers,â says Keyvan Esfarjani, senior vice president and general manager of Manufacturing and Operations at Intel.

The company also ramped its new 10nm process this year. Intel currently manufactures 10nm products in high volumes at its Oregon and Arizona sites in the U.S. and its site in Israel.

In 2020, Intel introduced an expanding lineup of 10nm products including 11th Gen IntelÂ® CoreTM processors and the Intel AtomÂ® P5900, a system-on-chip for wireless base stations. In addition, the company introduced 10nm SuperFin technology, which enables the largest single intranode enhancement in Intelâs history and delivers performance improvements comparable to a full-node transition.

Esfarjani explains: â10nm progress is coming along quite well. We have three high-volume manufacturing operations that are going full steam ahead to see how we can do more, better and faster, and continue to support our customers.â

Intel 10nm Cannonlake processors delayed to late 2018

Intel has been having a bit of trouble with its 10nm Cannonlake chips, already twice delaying shipments to mid-2018. Now, sources within the supply chain are saying Intel has yet again pushed the ship date back to late 2018, giving some vendors pause as to whether the chip is worth the wait.

The sources have told DigiTimes that the delay in the shipment of the processors is causing many manufacturers to consider skipping the Cannonlake altogether to wait for the release of the 9th-generation Ice Lake 10nm-process chips. DigiTimes said that many notebook vendors have started their 2018 notebook request for quotation (RFQ) processes, but now are forced to shift gears with the Intel delay.

As if to tease vendors on what to expect, Intel showed off a wafer-thin Cannonlake chip at its Technology and Manufacturing Day in Beijing yesterday. Cannonlake is the first chip to use the 10nm manufacturing process, with predecessors Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake using 14nm.

Intel's Stacy Smith, group president of manufacturing and sales, said that the chip continues Moore's Law of more functionality and performance in an ever-shrinking size.

A slide during the presentation from the Beijing event, spotted by Patently Apple, shows Intel pushing its 10nm process later than previously announced, possibly even into 2019. The 10nm Cannonlakes were originally supposed to start shipping later this year...

Intel Plans $5 billion Investment in Israel Plant for Expanded 10 nm Production

Intel can't even sell quad cores on 10nm lol. They're far behind and won't admit how bad it is. New node will be even worse. They can't jump ahead. They're stuck on monolithic dies for the time being.

Who is ahead of Intel?
In terms of density TSMC 16nm/12nm and Samsung 14nm/12nm is just a little denser than Intel 22nm. Intel 14 nm is nearly "one whole step" ahead of the competition. Intel 10nm will be a larger jump than 22nm->14nm, so Intel "10nm" might be closer to 1.5 "steps" ahead of TSMC "7nm".

It will not surprise me if we see 3-4 iterations on Intel 10nm for desktop products, and there will be various chipsets and more produced on 10nm.

Intel reveals Ice Lake 10nm+ chip

In an unusual move for Intel, the chip giant has ever so slightly taken the wraps off of one of their future generation Core architectures. Basic information on the Ice Lake architecture has been published over on Intel's codename decoder, officially confirming for the first time the existence of the architecture and that it will be made on Intel's 10nm+ process.

The Ice Lake processor family is a successor to the 8th generation Intel® Core™ processor family. These processors utilize Intel’s industry-leading 10 nm+ process technology.

This is an unexpected development as the company has yet to formally detail (let alone launch) the first 10nm Core architecture – Cannon Lake – and it's rare these days for Intel to talk more than a generation ahead in CPU architectures. Equally as interesting is the fact that Intel is calling Ice Lake the successor to their upcoming 8th generation Coffee Lake processors, which codename bingo aside, throws some confusion on where the 14nm Coffee Lake and 10nm Cannon Lake will eventually stand...
