Windows 10: Intel GMA Driver Crashing on Atom Z2760-based HP Envy x2

I have a 2 year old HP Envy x2 hybrid touchscreen laptop with the z2760 (Clover Trail) chip set and GMA graphics. When I installed Windows 10 for the first time it failed to recognize the graphics chip and installed the Microsoft Basic VGA Adapter instead.

Updating the chipset software using the most recently released package from HP.com (for Windows 8.1) enables the accelerated graphics, but the driver isn't stable. Edge crashes regularly, the Windows Store doesn't render properly (missing/invisible text/buttons), and the driver tends to crash/recover when coming out of suspend/sleep.

Question: Does anyone know of a newer driver for Intel z2760-based PCs that fully supports Windows 10? The current driver version 9.14.3.1168 is barely functional and quite frustrating to work with. I keep checking Windows Update in the hope that Microsoft will release an updated driver but so far no luck.

People said that it's a matter of drivers that Microsoft need to release for Windows 10 to work with Intel Atom z2760 CPU + Intel GMA + CloverTrail SoC.

 

intel does not support Windows 10 on atom z2760

So has the updated drivers been released for these?

Acer made a tablet called the Iconia W3 810 that uses the same CPU. They have a download package that includes a slightly newer Windows 8.1 driver, but it is 32 bit only. The version is 1176. See here:

I wouldn't try to install this complete driver package. Instead unzip it, then look at the folder MI, Drivers, Graphics.

Give it a go and see if it works?

 

There has been an issue with the Intel Atom chipset drivers for the GPU/APU, since 8.1 came out. A lot of that hardware was only intended to run 7 only.

Intel has kind of been lax in keeping up with the Windows side of things. But they are more up to date with the Linux side & Mac OS side.

 

Unfortunately Intel is not supporting chipsets or graphics older that third generation Core i processors (Ivy bridge or greater). The Intel GMA and HD graphics drivers for systems older than that are experiencing crashes and performance issues in Windows 10. Its been reported to Microsoft and Intel but Intel refers people to their compatibility chart.

Yeah, gave that a try...as well as versions from other vendors with similar systems (version 1177, for example). I always end up with the "The driver selected for this device does not support this version of Windows" message. Which is ironic since the older driver from HP's web site (part of the overall z2760 chipset package for the Envy x2) installs without complaint despite being designed for Windows 8.x.

Anyone know how to work around the above installation error? I've looked through the .INF files for various versions and have never seen any significant differences. I've got to believe there's a way to spoof this process so I can at least try these (slightly) newer drivers.

Well, I managed to get a newer driver installed - 9.14.3.1177 - but still no fix for the rendering issues with Windows Store, etc. Hopefully Microsoft will smile upon me at some point and release an updated driver through WU. Until then, at least Windows 10 boots and is mostly functional. I guess I can deal with the occasional driver crash as long as it recovers successfully each time.

Really doubtful as it has already been stated that Intel has left those parties that chose to go with 8.1 or 10 behind.

 

Yet it is so confusing, because if you go to Intel's own page for HD 3000 (Sandybridge) that the chart says is not supported it shows there is a beta driver in Windows 10 for this GPU! If it isn't supported, why is there a Windows 10 driver for it?

Moreover, I have now checked several laptop computers with Ironlake (Arrandale, 1st generation Core i3), G965 express, and even 4 Series (Cantiga, GMA4500) GPUs and the Windows 10 compatibility report says the computers are compatible and do not mention the GPU being an issue!

If only Microsoft just licensed the driver source code from Intel and then made their own WIndows 10 WHQL tested drivers. After all, isn't Microsoft trying to get as many people to install Windows 10 as possible in order to encourage developers to make modern Windows apps? There are millions of people who still use Sandybrdge based computers every day.
