Windows 10: Intel rapid storage on or off?

Was poking around in BIOS and saw option for intel rapid storage tech was set to off. I have an SSD but wondered if it should on or off. Obviously I didn’t tinker as don’t want to cause carnage but was just curious

I have found solution for my case by removing Intel rapid storage technology driver and using MS default Intel rapid storage technology driver.

Just install the newest version of Intel Rapid Storage technology software.

You should be good to go after that.

Intel RST is really intended for RAID arrays, though it will work for individual drives. You probably can leave things well enough alone without losing much (or anything) performance-wise for a single drive configuration. As far as I can tell there is no performance gain switching from AHCI to RST on a single drive.
I do use the RST drivers in RAID mode though as it makes adding an array easy should I need it.

You can leave IRST off in the BIOS which I think is for RAID support but consult the Winraid site in Post 2 and ensure you have the optimum IRST software driver installed for your motherboard chipset.

 

I have it enabled on my system and my setup is a single drive in AHCI mode. All it is, in that mode is a HDD monitoring system. I have a case that has a built in docking station and I enabled all my SATA ports on mobo to use the hot swap feature. So when I pop in a hdd in it, the IRST fires up and shows my my drive and reports on it's condition. This is straight out of Ed's first link.....

Main program functions:

• Status - This is the main screen where you can determine the status of your storage devices.
• Manage - This area displays detailed information about each element that is part of the storage system, such as volumes and disks; the storage system view shows how the selected element relates to others. Each element has its own 'Manage' area which is accessible by clicking any element displayed in the storage system view under 'Status' or 'Manage'.
• Accelerate or Performance (depending on version) - You can configure an internal solid-state drive to be used as a non-volatile intelligent caching for a disk or a volume present on your system. Moving frequently accessed data over to the cache allows you to improve overall system performance, increase read/write access speeds, and reduce start-up times without adding more system memory.
  
  This feature also increases the power efficiency of a mobile computer by retaining stored data and reading data from the cache instead of the SATA disk itself.
• Preferences - System preferences allow you to decide whether you want the notification area icon to display. In addition, you can select the types of notifications you want to receive, such as storage system warnings or errors, and be notified of any reported problems while the application is closed
