Windows 10: Intermittent communication RS232 on win10

Hi all. I've fallen into an app support role at my firm, and despite gaining a reasonable amount of experience with bespoke apps, I'm still shaky on hardware, lot to learn.


Having trouble with serial communication via RS232 since win10 upgrade but its intermittent. Device (a lab instrument) is connected. As the app opens, it should communicate with device and if it doesn't, it fails to open. If it does, a comms light on device flashes.


Have determined that communication only occurs maybe once every third machine (pc) reboot. As machine starts up, comms light might flash, so I assume serial ports send a test signal? If the light flashes at this point, I know the app will work. If it doesn't, it won't.


App is definitely win10 compatible. Cable tested on non-networked win7 pc, communicates every time so reasonably confident its not device related. Bespoke cable means can't use a usb-serial adapter.


Updated drivers, stripped off group policy, disabled firewalls, disabled and re-enabled com port, checked bauds, lowered the rate app side, reset the ports via regedit, disabled serial mouse detection on start up (changed reg to a 4, as seen on article on here) and nothing is making any difference.


Any ideas what else could be causing this intermittent issue? Could the device be mistaken for anything other than a serial mouse? The fact it communicates or not during pc start up makes me think it must be hardware/os related?

We have reproduce the issue here and we are able to access non-regional search for google using Microsoft Edge.
I would suggest you to try the below steps and check if it helps.
Step 1:
Clear browsing data option of Microsoft Edge and check if you face the issue. To do so perform the steps below.

1. Click on the More actions icon next to the feedback icon present on top right corner of the Project Spartan homepage.
2. Select Settings and click on Choose what to clear.
3. Check the boxes Browsing history, Cookies and saved website data and Cached data and files and click on Clear.

Step 2:
I suggest you to create a new user account and check if the issue occurs.

1. Go to Settings.
2. Choose Accounts and then select Family and other users.
3. Select add someone else on this PC.
4. Enter a user name and hit next.
5. Click on Finish.
6. Sign out from the current Account and Log into the new account.

Step 3:
It could also happen because of network issue. I suggest you to try with different network connection and check if it helps.

 

Windows 10 Prolific USB-RS232 Driver Issue

I suggest you to go to the manufacturer’s website of your
Prolific RS232-USB driver and check for any updated drivers available there. If so, try to install them and check if it fix the issue.

If the issue persist or if no updated drivers available then try installing the available drivers i.e. Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 drivers in compatibility mode.

Follow the steps below on how to install driver in
compatibility mode:

1. Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website and save it on your local disk.

2. Right click on the setup file of the driver and select
“Properties”.

3. Select “Compatibility” Tab.

4. Place a check mark next to “Run this program in Compatibility mode” and select operating system from the drop down list.

5. Let the driver install and then check the functionality.
