Windows 10: Intermittent crashes when the screen is off [nvlddmkm.sys]

Hello,

my desktop computer running Windows 10 with all the latest updates started crashing intermittently but regularly, i.e., about 3 to 4 times a week under daily use, this April or May (around the time the Windows Spring Creators update was released).

The crashes almost always occur when I take a break and let the screen go black. When I come back to the desk, the power button LED on the front of the PC plus the lights on the keyboards and mouse indicate that the computer is still running (hard drive LED stays off though). However, it appears frozen and can't be woken up again - at this point I have to push the reset button. Since this all happens while the screen has gone dark in line with my energy settings, I never actually see a BSOD. I can't tell if the problem coincides with the computer transitioning into standby or hibernation mode.

I used BlueScreenView to have a quick view at the dump file, and it indicates a KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED error caused by nvlddmkm.sys, hinting at a problem with my nvidia Geforce 960 graphics card. I've had this card for over 2 years and never had any issues so far. The remaining system specs are in my profile.

Getting nvlddmkm error in event viewer, game crashing


1) Run Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
At least 8 runs

2) run administrative command prompt:
sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
chkdsk /x /f /r
For the chkdsk it will require a reboot and may take many hours. Plan to run it overnight.
To view the chkdsk results run administrative command prompt or powershell: get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt

Let us know the results of each study.

HyperSLI (Enabling SLI on non-sli motherboards)

Hi all, I have some issues...after i installed the latest nvidia beta drivers 290.36, i keep getting crashes on windows boot (black screen) or BSOD of nvlddmkm.sys...I reinstalled drivers,and latest hypersli and problem didn't get fixed *Frown any tips?

I already ran sfc scannow yesterday, as well as DISM checkhealth, neither returned error. I didn't run DISM restorehealth or chkdsk though, is it still needed?

Btw I'm not getting any BSOD's or any windows problems, only issue is game is freezing and crashing.
