Windows 10: Intermittent Stuttering/Freezing/Lock-Up on Windows 10

Hello All,


I'm new to the Microsoft community here, but I'm a long time Windows user. Recently I have been having a very irritating issue where my computer locks up/freezes/stutters for a split second. My mouse stops moving, typing stops, screen doesn't update in applications/games, etc. As far as I can tell, the issue is graphical because playing audio does not stop and processes are not interrupted.


I am not sure how to diagnose this problem and do in-depth research to fix it. There are no spikes in resource usage when I go to task manager, event viewer doesn't seem to offer any useful information, Windows is fully updated, my graphics drivers are fully updated, and my overclocking is turned off.


So far I have tried the following to fix the problem to no avail:

1. Update Windows fully now Windows 10 Home, version 1909, OS build 18363.752
2. Update Graphics drivers via device manager
3. Run CHKDSK
4. Run system file checker, SFC

System Specs:

• AMD Ryzen 7 1800X @ 3.6GHz w/ Corsair water cooler
• ASUS ROG STRIX X370F-GAMING mobo
• XFX brand AMD RX 580 in PCIe x16 slot refurbished
• 32GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4-2133 RAM
• Corsair TX 750M 750 watt PSU
• Samsung 960 PRO 512GB NVMe SSD in M.2 slot Windows drive
• Some HDDs, blu-ray drive, wireless card, etc.
• System is dual boot with Ubuntu

Any ideas on how to further diagnose or address this issue? Thanks!

I suggest you run rthdribl > http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/archives/rthdribl_1_2.zip
Increase the window size step by step and watch your vga temps permanently.
What happens?
If it crashes, run at stock speeds as suggested before and retry.

P.S.: When your system locks, does the display signal turn off after a time?
Stuttering sound or no sound at all when freezing?
What X1800XT model do you own exactly?

ive watch my temps and both the cpu and gpu are within normal ranges. when it freezes it simply freezes the image and stops the sound. i must reboot to get back to windows.

 

Win 10 CU (not FCU) stutters and freezes a lot with various operations

I get momentary freezes and stuttering with a range of Windows menu operations. *sarc These are the ones that are top of mind but I'm sure there are others. Win 10 Pro 64, up to date on patches.

• Xing out a FireFox tab
• Click on FILE menu (drop down is delayed)
• FILE > Print (printer list or print menu is delayed)
• Selecting a higher level on the file path in the SAVE menu
• Search menu at bottom of Windows
• Typing in many situations.

Any suggestions? Or this this a known problem in Win 10? I've had this problem for some time, but lately it has gotten me really PO'ed.*Confused
