Windows 10: Internet Download Speed

So what I'm about to explain is an issue thats been happening for a long time on all devices. Our internet download speed is and has always been very slow. Whenever I do an internet speed test I get 25 to 26 megabytes which is what we are paying for but when I actually start downloading it onl gives me around 3 megabytes. This has happened across my laptops, phone, playstation and my pc which i just recently built. When I am using steam the internet seems to be good getting the amount we need but when I use any other application or site it is just dreadfully slow speeds. I checked task manager

• I would suggest you to test the speed using any of the speed test website or app to confirm the upload and download speed.
• I also suggest you to reset the wireless router to check if that helps.

Internet Download Speed Problem

Internet speed tests should be run when nothing else is running on your computer.

Anything running on your computer, particularly an application that is resource-hungry, such as an antivirus scan or an application that synchronizes your files with cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud), will adversely affect your measured Internet speed. If you use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) that will also degrade your measured Internet speed. Old hardware can also be the source of a slow connection.

How are you being supplied with Internet service:

• dial-up
  
• DSL
  
• cable
  
• fiber optic
  
• satellite
  
• cell phone
  

However you get your Internet service, you will have one or more hardware devices, typically though not necessarily supplied by your service provider, located between the "outside world" and your computer. You'll see names such as "router," "modem," and "gateway" used to describe this hardware. In this context, a "gateway" combines the function of "router" and "modem" in one box. There may be other devices and or functionality involved too, but the details are not important for now.

What is important is how your computer connects to this hardware, because that will also affect your "Internet speed." Is your computer connected to the interface hardware by

• Ethernet cable
  
• USB cable (rare)
  
• wi-fi
  
• something else
  

There are various web sites that you can use to measure "Internet speed." Speedtest by Ookla is one of the well-known ones.

• Close all applications running on your computer other than one web browser
  
• Which web browser are you using?
  
• Go to this site: Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test
  
• You'll see two pieces of information under the large "Go" button (see screenshot below).
  
  • The one on the left shows your ISP and the IP address that your ISP has assigned to you.
    
  • The one on the right shows the testing server that has automatically been determined to give you an "optimal" connection. This shows both the owner of the server (which probably will be your ISP) and the general geographic location.
    
  • Approximately how far away from you is the location of the select server?
    
• Click the "Go" button
  
  • What is shown for:
    
    • Download speed
      
    • Upload speed
      
    • There are 3 small numbers under the download and upload results; from left to right, what are those numbers?
      
• Click the "Change Server" link and select another server, preferably one that is not your ISP and isn't too far away geographically. Run the test again and report the same information as before.

There are several factors that affect your internet speed. A few would be connection speed, network traffic, hardware capability, and type of connection. To help us identify what might be causing the slow internet speed on your laptop, allow me to ask the
following information:

• How's your laptop connected to the network? Is it directly wired to the modem/router or wirelessly connected?
• Were your other computers that were getting 100 Mbps download speed connected to the same network?
• Were there other devices connected to the network while you tried to download?
• Have you tried connecting your laptop to a different network? Did you get the same internet speed?

In the meantime, please run a speed test on your laptop. If the internet speed is slower that your internet package, then you may try to update the drivers of your network adapters to ensure that it's up-to-date. Please check out and follow the steps provided

If you're trying to download while your laptop is wirelessly connected to your network, then kindly check its wireless adapter speed by checking its Wireless Network Connection Status. Follow these steps:

1. Right-click the wireless icon on your system tray, click Open Network & Internet settings, then click
   Wi-Fi.
2. On the right pane, click Change adapter options.
3. Right-click your Wireless Network Connection and click
   Status.
