  2. Internet explorer has stopped working (all the time)

    Support for Internet Explorer 8 (and IE9 & IE10) ended on 12 January 2016.

Extended Support for Vista SP2 ended on 11 April 2017.

Extended Support for WinXP SP2 ened on 08 April 2012.

Considering the above, chances are nothing on your computer is working properly now.

I don't know that device, but if it originally shipped with Windows 8, I believe that included Internet Explorer 10, so the following would apply.

What happens if customers did not move to the latest browser by the end of support on January 12, 2016?

Customers had until January 12, 2016, to upgrade their browser after which time the previous versions of Internet Explorer reached end of support. End of support means there are no more security updates, nonsecurity updates, free or paid assisted support
options, or online technical content updates.

    Lifecycle FAQ—Internet Explorer

Unless you're using IE 11, the browser won't receive any security or other updates, so it would be highly susceptible to any exploits affecting the browser itself, resulting in a higher potential that any website exploit attacks might succeed.

So yes, upgrading the tablet to include Internet Explorer 11 would be highly important to its security. In fact, if there are any other applications included on the tablet that can be upgraded, the should be as well, since if the apps are at all popular
they might be targeted by malware as well for this very reason.

Can't say how much of a difference it will make, but I'm quite sure there will be some effect.

  4. Internet Explorer 8, 9, 10 support ends on January 12, 2016

Well actually, Internet Explorer 9 stays supported on Vista only. And Internet Explorer 10 stays supported on Server 2012 (though in the latter case browsing isn't a priority). In all other cases though, it is IE 11 and Edge from here on in.

  5. What I am a little surprised about is that IE 8 is still being supported on POS Ready 2009. I had heard previously that support would cease anyway for IE 8 because browsing was not a priority on a point-of-sale system. Lucky for XP users who are using the POSReady update registry hack, I suppose.

As far as I know I remember for the last few years I had my PC with Windows Vista that you could not update past the IE that it came with.

  7. If you have SP2, it will allow updating to IE 9. It originally came with IE 7.
