Windows 10: Internet needed just to log in to my laptop?

Why do I have to already be connected to the internet just to log in to my laptop? I am new to windows 11 and already not happy as I could not access my laptop for class today because in order to use the Wi-Fi at school I have to register my device and I could not make it past the window that I would normally enter my password just to access my laptop. Please help because if this is the normal now I need to return my laptop because I will never be able to sign in to my laptop to register it for Wi-Fi if I can’t even get in to my laptop.

We understand how difficult it could be and we appreciate the time and effort that you have taken to work this issue. However, in order to get clarity, we would need some more information regarding the issue.

1. Were you using the “Old email (account) address” regardless of not using laptop?
   
2. Are both the email addresses linked?
   
3. Could you please let us know, where exactly you get prompt for the password for the “Old email address” in the desktop?
   
4. What is the exact error message you get when you try to log in to laptop?
   
5. Does your desktop has two user profiles?
   

In the meantime, we would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below and check.



You would need to have internet connection in laptop, so that the password change could get updated and it seems that the laptop is not connected to the internet, we would suggest you to connect Ethernet cable to laptop and then
try logging in to the laptop with the new password for the old email address.

Setting Up Laptop – 1

• • Go to My Computer and Open its Properties.

Note – If You are a Windows 7 User then Go to My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced System settings

• Navigate to Computer Name tab and Select Change and Rename the Computer Name to ‘Laptop – 1’ and Tick WORKGROUP and Give it any name as shown below in the Image.
  
  

• Now Go Network Connections.

Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center – Change Adapter Settings

• Now Navigate to the ‘Wireless Network Tab’ and There Select Advanced Button and then Select Computer to Computer (Ad-Hoc) connection.

• Click on Add Preferred Networks and Provide the Following Details.

Network name (SSID) – WiFi
Network Authentication – Open
Data Encryption – Disabled

• Now You need to Configure your TCP/IP Settings to Assign the IP Address to the Laptop.

• Open Your Network Adapter Settings and Go to Properties and Select Internet Protocol Version 4 and Provide the Following IP Address as shown below in the Image.

IP Address – 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask – 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway – 192.168.1.2

• Click OK and You are all Done.
